How very wrong you are..
You'll need ID for a good few years after you reach the drinking age.

Ironically, the first (and only) time I have ever been asked for ID was about a month after I became old enough anyway
On a more on topic note, 22nd sept should be ok for me. 15th would be the day before my birthday.

Not this, in my experience. As far as I can recall, the last time I got asked for ID when buying alcohol in the UK was when I was seventeen. I didn't even get IDed in the US that frequently, and stores there are normally meant ask for ID if you look under thirty(!)
It really just depends on how old you look, and probably more importantly on how much the local constabulary have recently been giving hassle about under-age drinking to pubs et cetera in your area.

In merka I got asked a fair bit, then again, so did halus.
Whenever I've been ID'd here, I've just asked them if they're taking the piss, usually get served without giving ID

It's a fickle thing though, and varies hugely from place to place as well as time to time. Supermarkets are often the strictest for ID. However, there's no reason not to carry ID if there's even a remote possibility you'll get asked for it (assuming it'll prove you are actually over 18 ). I just keep my driving license in my wallet and then don't have to think about it.

I think ID that proves you're under 1 isn't particularly useful.

Anham: Eh? Come again?
Cashier: You've got to be over 16 to buy ciggarettes.
Anham: Err..........I'm 27?
Cashier: O'rly?
Anham: Ya'rly!

Are you kidding? Babies can get away with all kinds of stuff. If you or I did things in public like shitting in our pants or sucking on a woman's boobies... oh, wait...

I still get asked for ID, even though I've been 18 twice. Then they get pissy because my faded parchment of a driving license doesn't have my picture on it. That's because it was issued in 1988.

Reminds me of that OAP a while back who was refused to be served by a cheeky store assistant when she wanted to buy some fireworks and didn't have any ID
