A reet larf last night. As much as I enjoy fannying about, it's good when we actually do stuff that works - ish.

Spotted this on another forum. Oh dear:

Last night was quite fun.
However, by the looks of the PS2 forums, the low performance I was on about seems to be a bug introduced with a patch on the 13th which has slashed FPS by about 30 to 50% for certain users. Currently a 30+ page thread on it.

Does it identify the cause? I see complaints about performance, but I've never once had an issue.

:above: This.

I've heard of all kinds of stuff about crappy performance, but even given the age and abused nature of the gonk, it just gets on with it. doesn't really lag or bog down ever.

Nah, SOE have just said they are keeping an eye on it

However, I think it's something tied to the CPU as I just upped all my GFX settings again which hasn't really changed it, and turning off vsync is getting roughly an extra 10-15 frames. Not ideal, but the game is much more playable at 30-35 FPS than it was at the ~15-25 FPS it sank down to last night.

Of note, when you bring your framerate up (alt-f), it'll have either CPU or GPU next to it to indicate which is the bottleneck.
It's constantly on CPU for me and others on that thread, which is odd considering my FX-8120 isn't the slowest of things and people are reporting it on i7's and the like.

Oh dear. Got kicked out of the game earlier when it appeared to fall over, tried to log in to no avail.

Just gone to log into the PS2 american website and got redirected to the SOE website with the following order "All users need to change their passwords". Might be an American only site thing. The EU site however isn't loading.

Haha.

The best thing about this is that they don't let you use old passwords, which suggests they A, keep your old passwords about at some level, and B, are giving passwords away so regularly that it's something they've actually accounted for.

Guess I'll be using FuckSony2 then. In other news, I spaffed 400-ish certs on Scythe goodies, and now I'm just as shit in them as I was before. But hey, at least when I get shot down I lose a more expensive fighter.

I do not understand the gun game in Planetside 2.

I always seem to come off worse in a fight, even if I'm being heavy assault and totting an MG against someone like medic in close range, a situation where logically I should be on top, it seems that 80% of the time I always die first and I can't figure out why.

I must be missing something, but as to what I've no clue.

You're probably missing the other guy.

Seriously though, I have the same in CQB situations, but can pretty reliably dispatch a bloke from a few hundred meters with most guns in a few bursts.

I don't think the LMGs heavies carry are great at one-on-one. I often come off worse even with shields. The lighter weapons are more accurate and with a higher rate of fire, although I've not tested the differences. It does make sense that the anti-tank class should lose out when toe-to-toe against an infantryman armed to combat other infantry.

Last night Anery, Buzz and I staged a commando raid against a tenuously adjacent NC territory. A medic, an engineer and an infiltrator, we took a flash each down the side of the map, set up a hidden squad spawn, captured the terminals and turrets, spawning a Sunderer and hiding it as a second spawn point from the former, before capturing the point. It went beautifully, and some friendlies noticed what we were doing and joined in. By the time we stopped what had started out as a three-man raid had turned into a modest attack which took a bio lab and created a salient behind the NC assault. That served as distraction enough to let the main VS horse push them back from our warp gate. This is Planetside at its best, three organised players snowballing a raid into a continent-affecting offensive.

We do seem to be having an impact whenever we play, and playing with a (semi)organised squad is definately the way to go.

I forgot to mention the impromptu disco we had with a squad of randoms as we were ninja capping. Disco seems to be becoming a VS theme.

I've just learnt a valuable lesson in parenting. I left Sprog on the VR range for a couple of minutes while I put some pizzas in the oven, came back to find her buying a £5 SMG for Infiltrator class. Gah.

Fortunately I'm a shit sniper, so it might be a decent purchase (think spec ops in BEEF), but I'd have rather waited until it was half price in a sale.

I think the smg's the infiltrator has can be used by all classes. If it the same as the one I've bought it's fast becoming a favourite weapon.

Had no idea there was a VR range though.

Oh! That would be pretty cool, and well worth the 700 creds. It seemed pretty accurate on the range over a lengthy burst, which probably explains my constant SMG deaths when toting an LMG.

Infiltrators with SMG's seem to be hit and run at near perfection with their cloaks. Thankfully it's not a widely used tactic as it seems it can go wrong very easily and sort of horses you to only take on lone enemies.

On the mention of the snipers though, picked up the cheapo Vanu bolt action the other day and unless the other one or two are significantly different in terms of bullet speed and drop, I fail to see how the x12 scopes are worth bothering with. The x10 I'm using is very situational and I think a x8 would be better due to the map design and how combat happens.

It's also a shame the basic semi auto sniper rifle can't be turned into a battle rifle or have something like a x2 red dot put on it, it would be much more suited for it.

I got the 8x too. I've seen enemies use a 12x effectively during extreme range sieges, taking me out from absolutely miles away, but I'll never have that level of skill.
