Yeah, don't get that Asus one, it's crap. My Dad has it, the little slider above the power button where the floppy is supposed to go falls open all the while and those CD bays are terrible. You have to remove the facia of your CD drives to mount them and the buttons don't line up properly, so you can't eject them manually. They're not removable panels as they appear in the pic, but hinged at the bottom with springs. Couldn't get the power led working properly, either.

Updated the first post to add antec 300 case, more PSU options, fixed some prices.

Just to tack onto my review of my new case.
It's got a bit of fail.
The HDD enclosure in the bottom left is a pain to get out with a mobo fitted (mobo needs to be moved up about 5mm to make it win) as you have to disconnect the case switch/leds as they get in the way.
Pain in the arse if you ever need to swap out HDD's, but would be perfectly fine if you only do it once or twice over the entire life of the PC.

So... What is the case?

So it's best to get an antec 900 because they are better. Thanks for clearing that up buzz.

WooHoo!
7.5 Year bonus came a couple of days early, so i'm ordrin mah bits as we speak. Sadly that P35-DSL3 motherboard seems to have gone out of stock all over the place, and i can't find any ETAs on restock.
So i'm probably going for one of the EP35-DS3 ones instead. Only a tenner more expensive i think.
Yay, looks like i get to build a system on tuesday! ALso, reinstalling windows. BOOOOO!

Some prices. I've looked at ebuyer/ocuk and scan (who cost more on everything I looked at and I don't like them) ignoring offers.
Berk why did you cross everything out in the sticky? CBA to update it?
~£100 9800gt
~£160 9800gtx+
~£230 gtx260
~£320 gtx280 (unless you get a point of view @ ~£300, and they're shit. So shit they have a 1 year warranty)
~£100 3870
~£130 4850
~£220 4870
~£375 4870x2
Big sites have already got their prices marked with the new vat. It's not much, but if you're feeling the need to upgrade, it's a bit more back in your pocket.
Anyone on the 48xx family still getting the micro-stuttering thing?

Also nehalem -
Core i7 920 (@2.66Ghz) £244 ebuyer / £270 ocuk
Gigabyte ex58-ds4 £218/£206
Corsair 6Gb (3x2) @ 1600Mhz £294/£287 (on offer at £250 this week)
Gainward rampage glh 4870x2 £494/£470 (on offer at £440)
Antec 900 to throw it in £75, enermax galaxy 850 watt to run it £135, samsung 1Tb to keep stuff on £74
= £1534 / £1517 (1450 with offers)
Not a totally mental price, given how long that would last you it's a big old wedge though. And does it even work? The cpu most likely, not sure about the x58 chipset though.
If you've got that kind of money for a system I'd say just keep half of it in your pocket and make a ddr2/c2d system that's ~15/20% slower, it'll still shit all over any games out now/next year.
That ram is one of the new 3 channel kits, a full 6 x 2Gb matching sticks can be had for ~£500, but that's
insane! Chickenz!

In the little dreamworld that I like to venture to every so often, I'm going to get a whopping big bonus this year, and buy a completely new PC, monitor and all, and a mahoosive television too.
Ah, dreamworld. It's a nice place.

Nehalem is out, but fucking pricey, building a new machine from these specs is foolish as they won't be massively future proof, fine gaming machines, but you're better off waiting a few months if you can.
I think that covers it.
This thread is really meant to give people a relatively future-proof machine, I figure that'd be allowing for an upgrade after 12-18 months to give the machine at least another year's useful life.
But, as nehalem/I7 is out, and pretty fucking expensive right now, I can't spec that under the budget machine thread, and building a core 2 machine wouldn't give the upgradability I aim for in these specs.
Admittedly, Socket 775 is still gonna be supported for a while, but more as a low end offering from what I've heard.

I'm way behind on graphics cards this generation. I need to start a 'spec me a gpu, bitches' thread at some point because I hate my 8800gts.

4850 or 4870 1GB, depending on budget.

4870 worth the extra £90? Might get that if it is. It's Christmas, after all (actually, might be worth waiting for january to see if the price drops).

That's a good question, probably worth the extra money unless you have a crossfire mobo, then a pair of 4850s are possibly an even better deal.

It's worth it if you're gaming at 1920x1200 or higher. Nvidia just released some new drivers that give big performance increases though so the GTX260 and 4870 1gb are now basically exactly the same.
I'm holding out to see what AMD's Phenom II turns out like before I build a new PC, its looking like they may have close to i7 performance for less moneys.

though I'm thinking pants might do well to avoid another nvidia card.

Why? I have an 8800 GT 512MB RAM, can't be much different to what you have, and it plays everything 1920x1200 smoothly.
