For comedies usually there's at least some of the best jokes spoiled in the trailer. There doesn't appear to be anything funny in that trailer, which doesn't bode well.

I'm about half an hour into it and it's funnier than the trailer. I've had a couple of laugh-out-loud moments. If you like Adam Sandler's old stuff then you'll probably enjoy it as has a slightly diluted version of that style. If you don't then you'll probably hate it, because Adam Sandler's irreverent style is the best thing about it. I'm happy* with this though. I like Sandler's old stuff, and this works well enough to be entertaining (so far).

Zzzz. The appeal of the first movie was that it was puny humans vs technological monsters. Now it's future-tech vs future-tech, and all the tension's gone.

I dunno, looks like it could be good explodey fun. I'm not expecting Iain M Banks.

:above: This. Looks dumb but entertaining enough. I doubt it will end up as good as the original was, but it doesn't look bad either.

I think it could be fun, they killed off Will Smith's character in a rather fitting way.

Turns out that Sci-fi film trailers are like buses, you wait for ages then they come in quick succession.

Today's sequel is Star Trek Beyond:

Interesting notes: JJ Abrams isn't directing and Simon Pegg has writing credits.

Nice use of the Beastie Boys there. They used them in one of the previous films as well.

I recently saw the trailer for the first Independence Day again - it's amazing how much is given away in it, and yet I still enjoyed the entire thing when I saw it at the cinema.

Beastie Boys and Star Trek. Just doesn't work for me.

It looks fine, and I am sure I will go see it and enjoy it immensely, but some part of me is sad for the loss of the old style Star Trek. Trek should not be a good fit for a director best known for the Fast and the Furious.

I remember when the late Next Gen films were criticised for inserting actions scenes into a series which wasn't really about action scenes. The buggy driving section at the start of Nemesis for instance. Now it's all about the action. Although I'll happily watch it for what it is.

For old style Star Trek fan made stuff like this can help to fill that void.

Simon Pegg pointing out that the trailer isn't particularly representative of the movie, in terms of the amount of action. Which is reassuring.

Interesting to see Simon Pegg's reaction to the trailer:
