After yet another fecking night of fettling with stuff and not succeeding in actually playing games, I *think* I've fixed it. As ever, down to the help of our good Dr., so thanks there berk.

how did you get it yours working?

Mine was an issue with my audigy crapping out and causing the PC to hang, with this constant noise that would kill dogs and bats when it did it. Reinstalled drivers seemed to be the final thing to fix it, but that was preceded by lots of fettling, swearing and frustration.

Current BSOD's on my new rig is Bad_Pool_Caller erroz, and looking up the problem, it's a driver issue, and I suspect sound card, as it's the only part of the pc that was carried over from my last one.

Hopefully last nights swearing session will have sorted it all out.

Anyone had success with the 162.18 drivers? Didn't notice them until last night.

one more thing i noticed.....it doesnt seem to blue screen on COD (or wolfenstien which i think runs on the same engine)

One thing I've found, which has helped with random crashes/BSODs/lockups when the system's been on all week:

Your nForce GPU fan speed isn't actually set here, as I'd assumed: (see the nForce slider set to 100% - this actually refers to the little nForce fan on my mobo)

Setting this at 100% in a profile keeps the GPU temp at 10-20°C lower than it was when idling after having played a game. For some reason the auto option is happy to let it sit at 70°C when idle, but setting it manually to 100% brings it down to 50-55°C within minutes of quitting a game, with no real noticeable increase in noise level.

I took the side off my case after a few crashes last night, and did some scientific temp testing using the End of Finger method held at various points inside the case. There are two spare slots between my gfx card and sound card, but they are both empty, so the 8800 is just blowing hot air onto the back of the soundcard. I shall see if moving it further away helps in any way, and I may also get one of those extra blowers like Chicken has to vent the gfx hot air out of the system rather than onto other stuff.

Edit: ntune isn't letting me adjust the fan speed, it just isn't selectable and reads N/A.

My case temp jumped very little after I replaced my 1900 with my 8800, purely because it was fitted with an exhaust system, I find they cost a bit more and take even more space, but unless you want phase change/water cooling/to invalidate your warranty with 3rd party fan, I feel its well worth it, its a few degrees, but less faffing than the other options. It arrives, you struggle to fit it, it helps suck air out the case. Mind you, I have a 120mm front and back, speed controllers for both, so if I get heat, I just run them at hairdryer speeds for a bit and the temp drops away.

It should be sucking air from the back-of-the-soundcard-area and blowing it out the back of the case. That's why it's important to give it a bit of space- so it can get a fresh supply of air, not because it heats up the soundcard.

An extra fan in there can help lots, though. My case has a clever fan built into it, which sits "above" the cards, and blows out the back through the mesh that's visible there.

Zomg, he has a spack fan, all backward an all! duuuh haaaw

right. after waiting 2 weeks for ECS to reply to my technical support form email (which i sent 2, 1 on 26th July and the other on 2nd August, both with no reply) (twunts), I have contacted the person I bought the card off in the 1st place and after explaining the problem etc. he has agreed to try to get it to ECS via his supplier, who gets it straight from ECS.

For now though im stuck with my nvidia 7300SE again! oh joy.

hurrrrah! after a long long time of playing practically no games, my card should be here tomorrow, all nice and shiny and fixed
no more bloody 7300se for ME!
