Ooh yes, that sounds great actually. Lay out roads and street lights first, and then go crazy with houses and shops and office buildings.
Think you could generate one of those enormous 256x256x256 maps with a little bit of water around the edges and flat ground elsewhere?
We could landscape the surrounding area ourselves.

It's not clear what caused the lag the other night. We weren't just using a map 4 times the size of the first one, we were also using new server software. I'm inclined to think it was a badly coded server. That's partly a techie hunch and partly based on the fact that all the associated software only just about works.
I'm attempting to generate a flat grass map that doesn't crash the server or the client. I'm planning on a 256*256*128 flat grass map. That's the same land area as our original, but twice as high. I don't want to risk the lag again, if that was the problem before. I'll see what I can do about adding some extra detail.
If you'd like to have a go yourself here's some links. It's quite easy to get these things to start, it's using them effectively that's the trick.
Original server (Java): http://www.minecraft.net/minecraft-server.zip
Other server (exe): http://sourceforge.net/projects/minercpp/

This is getting easier. There's a new server up: http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?serve ... 8917dd78c2 (added to the first post as well)
It comes with wide crossroads and a place for town square, to get things started. You can build as far down as you can up and there's no caves, lava or water inside the map. You can get water from the edges and channel it. Don't flood people's shit though.
I suggest if you want to build something big you start far away from the central spawn point. Make more roads, do whatever you want. But whatever you do don't make it normal.

Something strange is happening at the library. Look to the sky, then enter the building and search for the secrets to uncover the truth. Is this the end of 5punk Town?
You don't need to remove any blocks, there's no traps and it's best if you don't fly. I can tell from a CDC that least one of you had a sneak peek, but there's wasn't too much to look at until this morning.
