san andreas is downloading
I am the GTA whore. I am happy, as I'm getting between 50-100 KB/s on average.
Vice City kicked ass, so here's wishing that San Andreas is as good or better...

This is a game I'd really like to get, but it comes on DVD and I haven't got a DVD writer at the mo. This may be a daft question, but can DVD writers burn normal CDs as well? If they can, then is this a good drive to buy? Been thinking about getting one for a while, so maybe now is the time to invest.
want black because my case is black and I'm a bit of a tart like that - want it all nice and neat looking. I'm the kind of bloke who has his CDs and films in alphabetical order.

Normal DVD writers can write CDs fine, don't know about dual layer ones - but I think I shall buy this one tomorrow and let you know.Lateralus wrote:This is a game I'd really like to get, but it comes on DVD and I haven't got a DVD writer at the mo. Re: san andreas is downloading
I bought all three on PS2, but have played the first two on PC far more, even having not actually purchased (PC) copies for myself(*). Apart from the resolution being (at least) twice as high, it has always been a pain in the scrote to aim a gun with an analogue joypad. Some things, like driving is easier with pad - to me at least, trying to play Driver(1) on PC with a "real" horse-feedback steering wheel taught me that - and unless your PC is in the living room you lose the "party", "everyone-have-a-go-accesible" nature of the PS2 games. However, buy a dual-shock-style pad with a long cable for the PC and hook it up to the TV and everyone's a winner.deject wrote:I am the GTA whore. I thought GTA3 was better than Vice City, as VC felt a bit cramped and you were in your mansion in next-to no time (too easy), but the motorbikes were fun as was the ability to shoot out tyres (which I didn't even discover until a mouse was in my hand) a-la Mafia.
San Andreas, though kicks the arse of them both - even on the PS2. They've created a world, in a similar way to those in RPGs, where you feel you can just do anything - or nothing if you want. I love the minigames - ride your bike around, find places to spraypaint, go burglarising, just cruise - you get rewarded in some way for all of them! Having said that, I haven't played it for a while, as I'm stuck on a few missions, but with the precise control a mouse gives you that wouldn't be a problem, and despite the pain I might feel buying the same game twice, I might actually shell out for it this time. Wouldn't be the first time.
Edit: (*) I played other people's copies. On their computers. Obviously.

I thought he meant he hadn't got a DVD reader in his PC, with the game only coming (legally) on DVD ROM and all, that he might as well get a DVD writer at that price.Woo Elephant Yeah wrote:That's a good price!
P.S. If a DVD images is "aquired" (be a little more careful people when chatting about stuff) then you can use Alcohol 120% to mount it as an image, and install the game from there.
That is of course if you're talking about the PC version, otherwise I'm talking out of my arse

It's a credit to them that the driving does work quite well with the keyboard - I understand they've jiggled it so you use the (analogue) back buttons for driving on the xBox version, but the beauty of PC versions is remappable keys. In VC I had a digital joypad at the time, but mapped the buttons such that it made sense to me and flying the 'copters was easy-peasy - used the keyboard/mouse for everthing else, just picked up the 'pad when in a plane. Always had a bit of trouble getting a workable "drive-by" key layout, though - but being a good "drive-by"-er made a lot of missions far too easy anyway, GTA3 and SA included.wyrd wrote:some of the missions on VC are really designed for analog sticks
such as the one with the mini helicopters and the building, had to cheat that one out of the way
but, i do prefer driving with the keyboard
still not finished VC actually, couldn't be arsed to sell 100 "ice creams"

Yes, they're just asking for it really. My mate nearly shit his pants (with excitement) today when he asked me when SA was out and I said "I heard you could download it".killslay wrote:ironic, stealing a grand theft auto game
I'll probably buy it anyway*, as I just got a new graphics card (finally) - so I wasn't able to help him with locations of this supposed "download". It was just funny to see the look on his face.
The last one (VC) melted my backup tapes during a 5-hour sesh - "Wow you can even smell the buring rubber!" - but I have a little more sophistication in the cooling and case arrangement areas of PC assembly now

* despite owning the PS2 version, not as an alternative to stealing it
