If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

steam cockup

Post by thewombleofdeath »

right, again i have a problem with steam
for some reason when i click on the steam icon or any of the games no windows open or the little thing in the status bar thing next to the clock but steam.exe does appear in processes on ctrl+alt+del. i did the obvious thing of ending the process and starting it again but it doesnt want to start at all..its not just a one off thing. so ive uninstalled it and re-installed it and updated the graphics driver but still no luck :x
any ideas?

Seems like a perfectly appropriate sub-forum to me.

Try using Process Explorer rather than Task Manager - it might give you some extra insight. Beyond that, I don't have any advice I'm afraid.

Considering the software in question has its own sub-forum, I'd consider it best, but you are still right.

As for help, I'd back up all your content, delete everything steam related and re install.

Try killing off any other weird stuff that could be causing problems - PeerGuardian stopped Steam from working for me (different failure mode though), but it could be something else that isn't playing fair. Any funny-looking processes?

Also, what have you changed since Steam last worked?

Tried disabling most things like av's and suchlike?

Also, try killing explorer.exe, and just try running steam via the run box of doom.

:faint: god theres loads of bloody processes running on this thing and i dont know what half of them are.

plus, im not sure whether i rolled back my graphics driver before or after steam went balls up because the newest driver wasnt running games properly. its now on about november 06. other than that i dont think theres much else of huge importance

To get a list of them in text form, if you're using XP Pro, at the command line type the following:

Code: Select all

WMIC /OUTPUT:C:\Out.txt PROCESS get Caption,Commandline,Processid
and let us know what's in the output text file (C:\Out.txt).

:above: This

I was going to screeny and post my own xp home system processes, and highlight the ones I use that are NOT windows native, so you can get an idea of what should be running.

If you have trouble outputting a list, I shall do so.

Not seeing anything immediately untoward there, except for E_S10IC2.EXE (no idea what that is, given that I'm about a minute away from passing out off to bed).

If it's not solved by morning, I'll take a better look at it then.

E_S10IC2.EXE looks like printer related fluff.

Nothing really comes to mind for this issue, launch and nuke?

And, should really turn off the real and java updaters asap.

the only bad thing the java updater might do is use up a minuscule amount of resources.

also, have you tried nuking it from orbit*?

*uninstall and delete all directories and registry keys

True, but this is about getting CS:S to work, not general housekeeping, therefore, kill EVERYTHING!

But, make sure all your drivers are upto date first.
