Ultra Rumor: CVG says Blizzard announcing Starcraft MMO

Post by News Reader »

Image Ultra Rumor: CVG says Blizzard announcing Starcraft MMO
Filed under: PC, RPGs, MMO
ImageCVG is reporting that Blizzard's big announcement at the Korean World Wide Invitational (WWI) May 19 is an MMO based on Starcraft. Either CVG has the best inside Blizzard source ever, or some writer at CVG is begging for a pink slip reporting this as fact. CVG says, "The unveiling of the new installment [of Starcraft 2] has previously been rumoured for the South Korea event, though we now know that the title is in fact (emphasis ours) an online spin-off and not a new RTS game as previously assumed."

Despite saying the information is straight-up-fact, we can't help but be in shock and awe of the information. If true, it would open up a Pandora's Box of questions. How far is this MMO along? Will Blizzard really unleash another MMO to compete against their already insane mega-hit World of Warcraft, which sits comfortably perched atop the MMO ladder with 8.5 million subscribers? Starcraft 2, as an RTS, being announced at the Korean event would have made perfect sense, but this "fact" based information that CVG received seems to blow that out of the water.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

If Blizzard can make World of Warcraft in the Starcraft universe, and overcome the problems I had with it (ie, implement a buddy/sidekick system) they'll be onto a winner with me.

I discussed this with a few people at the bash.. I can't see this working, it'd take all the best bits of starcraft and fuck them up big time. Imagine trying to balanace a ton of units and then file them into character classes?

It's take the magic out of starcraft for me.. I'd much prefer an rts.
I'd go as far as to say I wouldn't even buy it.

Got to agree with grimmie here: Starcraft as an MMO would be very forced, unless they did something really different with the mmo genre. Seeing as Blizzards strong suit is doing the same thing thats been done before but doing it a fuckload better, I imagine it'll be a standard MMO fare, just really well done and shiney. Which is great, but, like grimmie said, would totally break the starcraft storyline.

All that being said, I would still give it a go, as I am an unashamed MMO whore :)

I call BS on this rumour.

There's just no possible way to covert Starcraft into an mmo, it just wouldn't work.

To be honest the Blizzard rumourmill has a bit of a reputation, I dont think they've mentioned anything to anyone and most of it is just brainless speculation. All signs point to there being an RTS made. One Blizzard employee mentioned something along the lines of.. "We've been investing a lot of time in our MMO and we'd like to go back to what we're famous for.."

But then again..
That could be a rumour too.

I don't particularly believe it either, especially after the April Fool's joke. I don't think it'd be crap just because of the setting though. Who says it has to be exactly like World of Warcraft? Why not like Hellgate: London - FPS for shooty characters, pointy clicky for close combat. If anyone can make a decent MMONG of a setting like Starcraft then it's Blizzard.

Did anyone ever see the comic strip thing they had years and years ago, Corps? It was particularly gruesome and I wouldn't mind seeing it again but the internet comes up a big fail.

well, not exactly. There was a financial report thing from them a while back that stated that they were going to do another MMO based on an existing franchise, and they have been recruiting recently for "development of a next generation MMO" (yes, I scour their jobs pages frequently. Damn thier european offices being in france!), so they are definately making *something*. As the choice for them, franchise wise, is starcraft or diablo, im guessing they are going to make starcraft. I really wish they wouldn't, but I bet they will.

I don't know much about Starcraft but I would like to play a sci-fi type MMO that's like W.o.W. I quite enjoyed W.o.W when I played it but there's only so much magic and elves I can take, I'd much prefer a sci-fi type setting. I've tried others and they're not as compentent as the mmo market leader. Apart from Eve of course, which I have resubscribed to.
