Fidling with my router

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Fidling with my router

Post by Hehulk »

I'm starting to get to my wits end with my router, mainly because I think It's what's been cauing my upload problems. For example if I try to sweep stuff, which ever program has 0 problems detecting my 4mb downpipe, but my 1mb up pipe always get read as 50kb or less. Would opening some ports on my router and directing said aps to that port solve this, is there a nice simple way to do that, or should I just get a new router?

If you are torrenting then yes you will need to forward a port or 9.

6881-6889 (Can't remember if TCP, UCP, or both... I have no doubt Berk will soon enlighten us, he'll know.)

A lot of routers have something called <strike>the most fucking stupidest security hole imaginable</strike> PnP, which will allow applications on your PC to control the ports being forwarded by your router on a whim. A lot of torrent software does this so this might be being done automagically.

It is also a strong possibility that your ISP is "shaping" your traffic meaning very little torrent traffic is allowed through. The ways around this are to move away from the default ports, make one up entirely random that is between 1024 and 65535.

50KB/s = 400Kb/s so you're using about 40% of your upload. Make sure the ports are forwarded like Fear says.

*Casts thread revival

Having given up on this in january, it's now bugging me again. I place I tend to sweep from is picky about how much I allow others to sweep my floor, and right now I'm having problems allowing others to do that.

I've Set-up a static IP (Cheers Berk  ), so all I need to do now is kick open some ports on my router, but sadly the password isn't what it's suppose to be (0000). Tried variants to access it (oooo) and other clearly odvious options (password, admin), but it's not letting me in. Any tricks people know to get me in there? (Detective work in the past leads me to believe I've got a Soho 1a400+ router, though it's not clearly marked on the router as being anything other than a soho broadband router)

to sort the password i'd suggest a hard reset on the router.

most likely on the back of the router there's a little hole with a reset switch in it, use a pokey-stick to press it, then set everything up again.

Yeah, it'll reset the router to factory settings.

Only way to reset the password really.

If you, or your browser can't remember it is the only way.

user: admin
pass: 0000

is the default for those, if you haven't changed it, a hacker might have, in which case you'll definately want to be resetting it.

Within Utorrent, there is an option to randomise ports every time you start Utorrent, I assume this will suffice to improve things?

Also, there is an option to disable automatic PnP, and I have turned it off. Is this going to stop anything from working, as I turned it off as it was recommended up there :above:

If you're going to have the randomized ports turned on, you should definitely have the Universal PnP on as well. If UPnP is not on, you'll have to forward the new random port every time you open utorrent up. However, having the random ports turned on is only necessary if your ISP is packet shaping and watching ports for BitTorrent trafic.
