I'd say the STAKLER difficulty is roughly as hard has Half-Life 2's Medium level, maybe a tiny bit easier.

Took me a while to get used to the style but now I'm popping the baddies fairly easily (though a beefed up AK is certainly helping alot here). There's only really two things annoying me so far: the spawn rate seems a little high and you can't really clear some areas, despite 'clearing out' the bandit base for example, and secondly my dude isn't strong enough to carry the vast quantities of ammo and stuff that I keep picking up. Otherwise it's a very gripping game and Mr T has already made be shout in terror

Stuff wot i suggest:

Set yourself 2 ammo dumps up, one at the bar, one at the trader.

Dump animal parts and 9mm ammo in the trader's stash box (stick a few guns in there too)

Dump suits, nice weapons, scopes, ammo and 4-5 bottles of vodka in the bar stash box.

That way you'll be able to keep a reasonably light loadout most of the time. which allows for more pickups and way more sprinting

Can anyone tell me how exactly I'm supposed to return from the train embankment without getting electrocuted? Or is this just a one-way trip sort of deal?

I'm at the bandit camp now (lying on the floor in a pool of my own blood, waiting to load the last save-game) and doing a little better now that I have a fully automatic weapon - but still finding it stupidly hard to get anywhere. I'm not used to being so damn squishy!

heading back, head to the left (opposite side to the tunnel) and there's a bit of pushed over fence.

or just shoot all the soldiers under the bridge :)

Well I found an artifact inside the tunnel (at the front of one of the pipes) that boosts endurance and protects slightly from electrickery - other than that I've just had to leg it.

I also found a nice little suit near there. As you exit the tunnel turn left and head towards some rocks - there's a suit that increases metabolism stashed in a metal pipe.

this is the deject recommended method. if you can, get up on the ledge above them and shoot down. you're more likely to get headshots this way, and you can more easily take cover. Plus, you get about 100 5.45mm rounds from them.

I'd heard all about bribing these guards but was busily exploring one of the nearby buildings when they all stopped for a natter right underneath me. One grenade and a few 9 mill sleeping pills was enough to persuade them to let me through.

Funniest moment so far: hiding in terror from some ravenous piggies only to see a bloom of blood and gore fly into the air as an anomoly spawned right underneath them

I've found two artifacts in that little tunnel, the both were in the little metal box with the guy, both increase stamina - the first by 36% and the second by 75% :)

Also, is the multiplayer any good? I haven't bothered checking it out yet. Is it good enough/is there enough interest in it to warrant our own server?

The multiplayer is completely bog standard, nothing special at all, there's deathmatch, team deathmatch and artifact which is basically capture the flag. The maps are all based on single player levels aswell so I wouldn't play it until you've finished SP unless you're not bothered about knowing the layout of bits you haven't done yet.

Mer, don't know what I'm supposed to do. Huge lag between voice and screen prompts don't help.

Will try playing again when my computer can.

Good aint it, ive uninstalled it from my system. After that massive wait I think its pulled a Doom3 and a Prey. Awesome first time round but absolutely crap second time round, I cannot be arsed to slog through it again to try and get a proper ending. Im gonna youtube them. Final verdict - Glad I :sweep: 'd it and didnt fork out cash.

Chicken, you're fucking weird. Your gaming tastes are all arse-about-tit.

My first impressions of Stalker are a bit meh, but that's probably because I got pwned on my first go and had to start from the beginning again. It's hard, and I noticed that the free-form environment did exactly the same thing both times, which isn't very free-form.

Still, I'm only on the first mission so I'm not letting this cloud my judgement just yet. I just hope I don't go the way of Oblivion and get bored of having too much to do.

I have to admit I was struggling to get into this game. Don't like the map and it's a pain in the arse to walk from place to place - especially when bandits keep re-spawning at places you've already cleared and pwn the fuck out of you. I'll admit, I had to drop the difficulty from Stalker to Novice.

That said it does seem to be getting better now - just been underground for the first time then went to steal some military documents. Most fun.

It actually reminds me a lot of Deus Ex, however I still don't think it warrants all the praise it's received so far (though I'm going to reserve my final judgment).

why the fuck would you do that? just go back to a save anywhere before the plant and do the few missions you skipped, only takes an hour or so.

I'm just plain flat-out not enjoying it now.
I'm not feeling the atmosphere - I'm not feeling immersed - I'm at a point where most of the missions I try to do are BROKEN - and I get killed at the most random moments without ever standing a chance of clearing the area.

I got so fed up with the difficulty yesterday that I activated God Mode. I usually do that when I get stuck with a game, but want to carry on to see how the story unfolds. I have to say, even the story in this game is half-assed. I'm up to what I feel should be a "very exciting and interesting" stage in the game, and I don't even feel like loading up the save game to play it through. I think I might just give up on this one and pray that Bioshock is better.

Oh, and for the record, Prey was awesome :D
