Can I have a word from the wise?

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Can I have a word from the wise?

Post by Hehulk »

Before I run out and waste something in teh region of £100 upgrading my graphics card, I figured it would make sence to ask if I'd see a noticable difference between stuff like a X1600 or a 6800 against my X700. I'm looking for a cheap cheery upgrade so I can run supreme commander without having big painful graphical lag when the unit count hits 200~.

I've only recently upgraded the PSU, and did so with having ideas of using more powerful and more power intensive cards in my rigs. Other thing that's letting me down is my sorry AMD64 3000+ CPU. Would I do better upgrading that instead?

I've got a 7800 and I still get this :above:

When the nukes drop it's 1 FPS :faint:

When the unit counts start getting silly, I get lag too. Less lag, but its still there.

I'm on a 7900gs, it still lags with alot of stuff on, I usually get around 20-30fps zoomed right out, 10-15 zoomed closer in, <10 using the free look while holding space. I dont think anything but the best will stand a chance of running soup smoothly.

It sounds to me like it's less graphical lag, more like whole system not handling it.

what you currently have is a nice balanced machine, nothing is overly bottlenecking anything else (assuming you have 2gb of ram)

Also, remember supcom is new, shiny and looks fairly graphics heavy.

will post again later gotta go out for a meal now

Settings / Video / Fidelity -> Low

It is a new game for me. OK it looks like Total Annihilation but it plays lag free all the time.

I got a 6800 GT AGP card - which sucks, but plays soup fine on these settings.

I don't currently have a great rig...well, I do have a half decent one, but it's 4 miles away about 25% built.

So for this machine, all settings medium->low, shadows off. Still lags in big fights and when it gets to multiples of 100's of units, starts being noticable around 200-250.

If it LOOKS crap, but still plays well, it's a great game, which soup seems to be, but narf, still prefer TA.
