Far to many games dying a death on 5punk lately

Post by Chickenz »

Righto, this will probably receive a fair bit of flaming but its a subject i feel we all need to discuss. Now i know that the majority of games will be surpassed and interests will die, but there are only 3 games being scheduled on a regular basis and i feel we need more.

CSS
Beef 2142
COD:UO

CSS - Bloody good game when its not zombie modded too early but im worried that after just 3 or 4 rounds people get bored and leave. Like Berk said in the steam forum it's ok at the end of the game but not if people are still enjoying vanilla CSS.

2142 - Crap, i still cant see why people to decided to adopt this over BF2 considering it's overall popularity. Now I never paid for the BF2 server we had (stupid bank taking my card off me) but i know it was cancelled as we waited to see what happened with Quake Wars. Thats been pushed back now and as far as im concerned BF2 was the better game. How about we get that back up and going, thanks Lat for scheduling a game.

COD:UO - No comment as i havent played it yet, however I am keeping my eye out for a copy.

These are just the 3 regular games im seeing posted on the scheduler again and again and again, and im worried that were not playing enough games. So please suggest games you want to see played more often or for the first times. Im sure most will be :sweep:

Suggestions of mine:

Postal2 - 5punk kind of humour, funny and chilled out frag fest.

Joint Operations - 8 quid from play, not the best graphics but a great game to play coop with 5punkers. Quick play, big maps, easy to use vehicles and quick repawn times.

FEAR Combat - FREE Quick paced, gory guns, and could easily prove itself as a 5punk favourite.

HL2:DM - Scheduled a few times but didnt really catch on. Another quick paced game, we've all got it, easy to pick up and play, theowing toilets at Pnut anyone?

Theres a four from me but please add more!!!!!!

I've been enjoying HL2:DM lately an awful lot, there is something greatly satisfying about having someone shooting at you and stopping them by spanging a toilet into their face

Indeed. I flipflop between games quite often, revisit old ones I've not played for a while and often drop ones I've been playing forever. It's just the nature of gaming I guess. I milk the udder of enjoyment from a game and slurp up it's milky fun juice (.. Ew.) and then when it's dry I discard it and wait for it to refill and look interesting again.

Or, something like that.

Er. Yes. Impromptu games for me, usually.
I'll make a point of scheduling more, but few people join when I do.

With regards to the various beef flavours, I'm only really playing 2142 as we don't have our own server for BF2. Though random public future beefing is actually quite fun compared to BF2 public servers, which are fucking shite, which is why I stay away from it these days. And since our BF2 server died it's a nice place holder until quake wars.

Also, I'm all for FEAR or HL2 DM. Slide tackling and using teammates as bombs is excellent, though for some reason there was only two maps working last time. HL2 DM seems to get old fast, but since it's been a long time since I've played it I wouldn't mind having a few games here and there.

Flaiming? On 5punk?

That said, I know there's a small beardy group of us about, and I'd love to play more dark crusade with people over ham and cheese. I'd advocate zero hour or brood wars as well, but I can never get zero hour to work over ham and cheese, and I still don't own brood wars.

I quite enjoyed the blat on FEAR the other night, assuming we get more maps going I'm all for that.

With regard to BF2, I stopped playing that when my DVD drive decided to stop reading DVD's. I will swap back to my spare and join that tomorrow. 2142 has never really caught my eye, no sensible reason, I just don't see the point.

I have ordered COD, but no-where had it in stock; and I was looking at a Duke Nukem Forever delivery time.

I don't own any Steam games, I have never played CS and narf, that puts me off buying HL2.

You've never played steam games so you won't buy them?

I tend to latch on to a game and play it a lot, usually at the expense of other games. Currently the game I'm playing most is actually FIFA 07 on the PS2. On the PC side, CS:S is getting the most action out of me, although my gaming time is generally much reduced at the mo due to being busy trying to buy and furnish a new house. FIFA is good cos I can play it for half an hour when I get in from work and put it down again easily. The games I play with 5punkers are generally at least 1.5/2 hour sessions, and generally in the evening when the missus is out. On the nights when she isn't working we ofter have plans, especially due to the aforementioned house-buying.

In terms of new games to play:

FEAR would be good I think, especially if we can get more maps. I've never really played HL2:DM much, but since the vast majority of people here will have it then I think it could be a winner.

Postal 2 I know nothing about, but am very willing to give it a sweep and see what happens. Raven Shield and SWAT were both pretty successful random games which someone (deject?) found and a few of us had some enjoyment from.

I want to play a bit of Beef because it is/was my favourite game, but I'm very much ready to move on with the times. That said, with my limited gaming time now I'm going to hold off buying a new MMONFPSWTFBBQ for a while. There are plenty of games I already own* that I've never even completed or still have earmarked for further playing. Oblivion is the prime example here, but I'll probably not start it again till I can make it shinier.

*Some I own because I bought the disk, some because I put them on to a disk.

I agree there should be more games. The #2 reason I stopped playing BeeF is because it was every damn night, and it's starting to get like that with CS.

I don't see why, if all we want is a quick blast once a week, we can't run an unranked BF2 server. At 3 points per round I'm never going to get any more unlocks.

More games is good, although we've tried things like TFC and HL2DM and nobody's turned up, Raven Shield and SWAT had a brief following, although by the time I'd had a go in SP to get what they were about, people seemed to have stopped playing them.

It's all down to whether people would agree to turn up for one-off games, we perhaps wouldn't want to play something like HL2:DM all the time, but if people would come even if they weren't that bothered about this week's "weekly random game" it could work as a general feature.

It's not a case of won't buy, but sooo many people have been playing CS for so long, I just feel I would be a gazillion miles behind before I even started. I have recently considered getting HL2 to play with 5punkers, but I doubt I would ever want to play it with randoms, so as I say, it puts me off buying it.

Also, I don't think not having our own Beef server should be a factor in whether or not we play it. Sure, it's nice to have admin control, but often this just led to as much frustration when adminning it as playing on publics did. To be frank, I enjoyed playing on our own server less than than I did on some of the better public ones (Lanarcy, for example).

Being crap never stopped anyone playing games here. Well, it's certainly never stopped me.

It's worth remembering that counterstrike is so popular because it's really fucking easy.

you buy a gun, you run around shooting, then repeat for 20 minutes.

not to mention I really wouldn't say any 5punkers are actually good at counterstrike, acceptable mostly, but nothing to write home about.

Aren't RTS games mostly 1v1 as far as multiplayer goes. While I wouldn't discourage anyone from playing them, they don't seem to lend well to the model of dropping in for a quick blast and then leaving again later on.

Incorrect!
Mostly 8 players in any combination you want to play in.

1 v 1, 2 v 1, 1 v 1 v 1 v 1, 2 v 2 v 1, 3 v 2, 4 v 4 etc..

Games can last anywhere from 2 minutes to an hour.
Starcraft custom maps for example can be played in less than five minutes for a quick bout of lols.
Empire building games do tend to last a little longer, but still lend to the casual, amusing gaming.

Joose and his wood/horses come to mind.
