(You must obey the) Supreme Commander

Post by Willard The Unwise »

Supreme Commander should be out today.

Anyone buying it today/tomorrow.

Anyone interested in having a thrash on it, probably, tomorrow evening? My missus is going to buy it me (tomorrow) having FAILED to purchase a suitably expensive gift.

Not that I give two hoots about valentines day. It's all about the GIFT.

Hahaha, I like it. My missus is currently feeling guilty about the fact that she spent roughly 1/10th of what I somehow ended up spending, never mind the fact that I did all the cooking and washing up on weds! She has some catching up to do I feel. :)

As far as supreme commander goes, not really seen much about it, but RTS games don't grape my squildo the way they used to a few years ago.

It takes a rare RTS to do it for me. I liked Starcraft, Ground Control and TA, and that was about it really. And I was shit at Ground Control.

I like the look of Supreme Commander, but the reviews said that there's a lot of resource management involved and that's the thing I can never be arsed with.

I tried downloading the demo last weekend but all the mirrors wanted me to register and/or pay, so I gave up. Still wouldn't mind trying it.

It is the spritual sucessor to TA. There is a bit of resource management but it's nothing more spectacular than having one resource (mass) in fixed locations that you have to mine and one resource (energy) that you can get by building the correct structure.

There is something in the building placement though, you get bonuses for placing buildings adjacent to resource extraction structures.

And I agree, it does look very good. Now if only I had a computer that was powerful enough to run SupreCom in dual head mode.

The whole "This unit will take 8 hours to produce" type production put me off a teensy bit.

That's base build time (and the max I've seen is 80 mins, for the nuclear missile silo, but I'll grant that's still barmy). If you set your base up right, you should have 1-2 guys speeding up the factories, 4-5 kicking out the structure (since the more units that help build something, the faster it builds) and the factories forever kicking out tanks, planes and subs. It's just about getting the balance right between power generators, mass extractors and mass fabricators so all this intensive production doesn't drain your mass/power at scary rates. And getting tech 3 buildings very fast.

Honestly, I tend to find myself so busy building up more infrastructure to support more factories that I don't notice the long build times.

yep. once you have your economy set up, you can just set a bunch of guys working on one thing. In the beta while I was playing about I put 30 or 40 guys working on some experimental units and it really didn't take any time at all.

The eight hours was refering to the Tech Three Dock ship for one of the races.
Maybe it wasn't 8 hours, slight exageration, but it was far too long for the quick fun I seek from games.

I just tried the demo and this is the first strategy that has ever held my interest more than a few minutes. I ended up quitting since I built a huge army then sent them to the enemy base in carrier things only to have the carriers destroyed along with my army because I couldn't work out how to make them drop my troops again...

It still seems like a pretty fun game if I can work out how to do everything, I might be buying this soon.

According to the manual (which isn't in french) which I'm having plenty of time to read as it puts 8GB onto my disk, you select the transport's Unload command, then left-click on the map.

It suggests a better way is to set a factory's rally point across the map somewhere, then order a transport to assist the factory - it will ferry troops as and when.

Hmm... there's 3 different limited edition versions, whats on those tech tree posters? Is it race specific depending on which box you buy or does it show all races?
