Piratebay wants to own a country

Post by ProfHawking »

You guys heard about this? Piratebay wants to buy a WW2 sea fort just off the coast of england. Its kind of a separate country, depends who you ask.
Anyway, piratebay recons they could run whatever servers they want without risk of being raided or shutdown.

I don't think they'll get enough money, even if they do and they get it running then the MOD will probably come back and blow it up or something. But its a nice idea! good luck to them!

I remember reading about Sealand a while back, heh.

Didn't know pirate bay wanted to buy it.

Anyway, even if it IS a separate country I bet people will still try their damned hardest to shut it down.

alledgedly some marine courts decided on this back in the sixties. if its outside the 12 mile limit, then it aint uk territory, and HMG cant do cock all about it, unless they illegally invade.....wait, where've i heard that before. plus i think the navy may be a little busy at the mo :)

its a legal grey area at the moment from what I understad. I'm in the process of making my own documentry on turning a patch of land I own in glen cairn into a country called "DavesLand" so done a wee bit of research on it.
As it declared principality before britains waters were extended past it its kind of a country. But as other countries have not recognised it, that makes it kind of not.
But it was declared before new international laws came in stateing that you cannot make a man made island into a country. Basically to stop this sort of interweb shananigans happeing.
It does have no import tax though and also enjoys other benifits of being its own country. I think parliment are just starting to ignore them now, they were going to take it back by horse in the 80's I think but the sun would have had a field day with that story so the decided against it.
/2p

Edit: oh and britains waters now extend past it so technically they kind of declared war on it i suppose.

What about the technical issues though? Like getting connected. Would they need to set up their own exchange? You can bet that they wouldn't get permission to use any on the mainland.

Yeah, i doubt havenco is still there, on their prices page the bandwidth is terrible, it must be outdated at least.
I also wonder how they could connect it to the internet.
They could lay a fibre cable, but its easy to cut it off that way. Is satellite viable?
But, a property development company is going to patch it up after the fire i think: http://www.churchandeast.co.uk/Sealand.htm
