Monster Hunter Freedom - PSP

Monster Hunter Freedom - PSP

Introduction
The premise is rather simple, you are a wannabe hunter and must go out on quests to eventually be the best in the land.

Gameplay
The gameplay is easily the most diverse and in-depth of all current titles, the possible competition for which is GTA: LCS, which is similar in several ways. Basically the gameplay revolves around you going out on various quests of increasing difficulty, most of which consist of gathering items, killing certain things or going certain places.

You can obtain new weapons and equiptment by either simply buying them, or you can craft your own by combining the correct materials, everything from giant swords to health potions and traps are craftable. Additionally, weapons and armour can be upgraded to improve their performance.

The combat system for fighting monsters is very easy to get to grips with, you press triangle to draw your weapon and then you tap triangle, cricle and r1 to attack and create devestating combos.

There are also many minigames including fishing, cooking, farming to name a few.

There is no online mode here apart from an online gathering hall where i think it's possible to obtain new quests and items aswell as swap guild cards with other players.
Sights and Sounds
Graphics are simply the best you'll see on a psp, environments are split in to medium sized areas that link together and each one has beautiful scenery and the monsters also look and sound fantastic.

Stuff that sucks
Some monsters are quite dumb, although im not really far enough to experience the more aggresive ones. Also, this is not a pick up and play game so it'll take you an hour or two to understand everything that is going on.

Minigames like cooking and fishing require precise timing and it can often get frustrating if you end up burning a lot of meat or losing a lot of bait.

Conclusion
A brilliant game, easily as good as it's ps2 counterpart although an online mode would have been nice, programs like x link kai will let you play online by tricking the psp to think its in a lan game. If you like rpgs like Action RPGs then this is the game for you and i would recomend it to anyone.

Nice review, thanks.

I admit I'd rather dismissed this game based purely on the box art, despite usually being a fan of action RPGs, particularly ones with a monster collection undertone. Well, that and not having a PSP.

Just watched the official trailer after reading this review, and I must say, I completely overlooked this release thinking it to be a bog standard top down rpg type game which I don't really go for.

It does look quite entertaining, but I'm looking for pick up and play games at the moment 15-30 mins sessions, and a game this good with lots of depth, would require much longer playing time.

Good review though, makes a nice change to see one posted in here :likesitall:
