Helpie! Internet Problems
I have a slight problem with my internet. It just completly slowed down (Speed test said 60kbps while its meant to be a 2mbps connection). Any suggestions or help in improving the speed would be greatly appreciated.

ISP is Pipex.
Internet connection runs through Netgear DG834GT Wireless Router (Computer is Wired up). It connects to on board network port. The router says its connected. The network port light flashes saying its connected. It says its connected on the network connections in control panel.
Any more information needed?

is the wireless actually off? I had the problem of some mooching git upstairs poaching my net when i first got connected. Noticing my slower than expected speeds i rang BT only to get the reassurance that as it was 'wired' the wireless was off. Still not satisfied i checked out the router settings and discovered that it was on. After switching it off the cheeky prick upstairs actually came down to complain about it, to which he was given the reply of: fuck you, you cheek bastard.

That would suggest something on your wired PC causing the problem, have you made any changes to your firewall or virus scanner recently? Try disabling both of them and see if that makes any difference, or change your network cable and port.Trect wrote:The wireless is on all the time (passworded with some encryption) but the laptop that uses it is off but the laptop is off. Tryed disabling my firewall but couldnt actually fine it. Would be helpful if i installed it though. Anti virus doesnt touch my internet connection at all. I keep Norton well away except for updates as its sucks my connection up like mad.
Cable works as i wired up laptop and it worked full speed. m guessing i need a new network card. My dad will be sooo happy. :D

This very hard indeed. Our network is secure, but two of my neighbours' aren't. Whenever I'm whoring our connection my housemate hops onto one of the neighbours' insteadJoose wrote:You could just secure it properly. WPA and mac address filtering FTW.
Unfortunately, due to various issues I won't get <strike>pr0n</strike> internet in my new house till late June, and research has shown a distinct lack of wireless networks at that end of my new street. Ah well. Single-player games FTM (for teh month)!
weird, I have similar with my new box, connection is sluggish and laggy compared to either the wired box in the corner or larrry the wireless laptop.Trect wrote:The wireless is on all the time (passworded with some encryption) but the laptop that uses it is off but the laptop is off. I know I have a chronic lack of ram, but would this slow the connection?
I have heard rumours about sp2 causing issues if it's not installed, but it's there on this one.
I'll be trying a different network card next.
//edit the next.
New network card, sorted the problem! just some ram now and I'll be unstoppable!
