The International 2014
The American group qualifiers started last night so even though the main event doesn't begin until July I thought I'd start talking about this early.
The International, which most of you probably already know by now, is Valve's annual Dota 2 tournament. It has a $6m prize fund at the time of writing and it's pretty damned polished - the main event in Seattle draws nerds from all over the world to spectate and it has professional sport levels of production.
It's e-sports then, which has a reputation for being pants, so why should you watch it? Well if you don't play Dota then there's probably no reason why you should, but if you do it might be worth catching a few games if you have time just to see. I was pretty cynical but I was surprised how much I enjoyed seeing how the pros play, watching the incredible stuff they pull off or feeling smug that they sometimes make the same mistakes as me. It's mostly like they're playing a different game with the same graphics though. One of the things I struggled with in other e-sports I tried to watch was that I couldn't follow the action. This is where the commentators come in. In the tournament proper they follow the action for you and enthusiastically talk you through it, and it made a huge difference for me. It's not all action all the time, but it's much faster paced than our Friday 5punky games.
Enough evangelising then. For anyone who fancies it you can watch it live in the game client (I think you might need a ticket for this), or as a replay. Both have a selection of commentators and it's surprisingly smooth. You can also watch on Twitch with their set of commentators, who are doing the group stages at the moment and seem like a nerd version of Big Brother with about a dozen of them in a house. It feels a bit amateurish at the moment, but they might tune it up as the competition progresses. They also have cats. Finally, you can catch replays on Youtube. This is a bit hit-or-miss with finding the right commentators, and it's not live, but it's an easy way of seeing the games as you would have in the game client.
For following along and winning in-game shit you can buy the Compendium. I assume this gives you a ticket to watch the matches live in-game (it had fucking better do), and it gives you a little rundown on each team to help you follow, as well as recording the results. Just like those ones you get for the World Cup. On top of that you can get stickers for it by playing games and watching matches, which can be traded on the marketplace, and you can predict various things (most courier kills in one match, for example). These net you points, along with some in-game stuff, which earns you stuff like boosts, a parrot courier, and loading screens. Unfortunately it's also £6, which I reckon is about £2 too much, but I gave it a shot anyway since I'll be trying to watch a lot.
I might post some of the better games here (YouTube links) for anyone with a passing interest, but for the most part hopefully a few of us will want to talk about matches and compendium stuff. I know there was half a dozen or so of us last year.
Re: The International 2014
As far as i know anyone can watch the games live for free, the compendium allows you to get shiny things throughout the duration of the international. i think you might also get the chance for item drops for watching games when certain things happen like multikills.
Re: The International 2014
Hooray for unlocking new loading screens from the compendium. Now instead of looking at the Dota logo I have Chemical Rage (Alchemist). Also, in the bit where you choose two teams to play off* I went for Team Spectacles and Team Hair Dye. The reactions would be interesting if my team was the one chosen.
I've watched a few of the American qualifiers now and enjoyed them. Well, apart from the one I watched on Youtube while washing up (UG Vs Liquid) which disconnected due to patching for about 15 minutes while the commentators went off on a caffeine ramble. Good drills Valve, patching Dota during your own tournament.
*One of the things in the compendium is to pick two dream teams, and a match will be be played using a randomly picked player's choice.

Re: The International 2014
Fantasy league is now open. I've done us the courtesy of creating one called 5punk. Password is badger.
EDIT: Looks like we all have to pick our teams in a draft at a date of our choosing (before the 19th possibly), so get in by Friday and we'll do it then.

Re: The International 2014
Just caught Zephyr (S.Korea) Vs Mith (Thailand) in the South East Asia qualifiers. It was a brutal steamroller of a match with Mith having it pretty much in the bag from some time around 15 mins. Some unwise drafting, early mistakes, and tactical inflexibility. It was a 31 min game in total but for the last ten minutes or so Mith were showboating. Some good team fights, nice analysis by the commentators as to what Zephyr did wrong, and a few dramatic retaliations from the underdogs. If a decent English commentary appears on Youtube I'll post it (although you can watch it in client).
Re: The International 2014
Apparently the fantasy league might be a bit wonky until the 19th, so hopefully people can join then because nobody could last night.
Also, here's that Zephyr vs Mith game. Different commentators, but they sounded fine from the bit I watched.

Re: The International 2014
My predictions for the qualifiers have pretty much stabilised, so here they are for a talking point among those of us who are taking part:
In A Single Game
Most Kills (Across Both Teams): 61-80
30-40 kills per side is pretty high even for the likes of us, but I've seen some pretty brutal games and there are a lot of qualifiers. Even so, I might be overshooting.
Largest Critical Hit: 1601-1800
I'm not really very au fait with precise amounts of damage done and had originally arbitrarily gone for half this, but the top score in TI3 was 1700 apparently and I don't see why it should be significantly different this year.
Highest GPM: 901-1000
This is a real toughy. Normal games seem to max out around 600, but I've seen a Templar Assassin with Hand of Midas and 600 last hits get in the 800s. Do something like that with Alchemist and you could probably top 1000, but it's probably not tactically viable.
Latest First Blood: 12-14 mins
I'm not confident about this one because most games have almost been decided by this point in a pro game, but as I've said before there are a lot of qualifiers and all it takes is for two teams to play super cautious and I reckon you might go this long.
Most Courier Kills: 3
One isn't uncommon, but I've not seen any more. Two would probably be disastrous, but I reckon we'll see it. Three should be fairly unlikely, but in a game where one side is getting spanked there might be some comedy courier abuse.
Earliest Roshan: After the Horn
Iknow it's possible to bag Rosh pretty quickly, but that's got to be a pretty risky tactic. I can't see anyone with anything to lose trying it. If they do though I might have a new favourite team.
Across the Qualifiers
Number of Rampages: 26-30
This is a guess based on there being 10 games per qualifier and four qualifiers, and that I see a rampage most games. Might be a bit low though.
Kills By Neutrals (Including Roshan): 0-2
Are pros likely to make such a schoolboy error three times or more? I could see a neutral getting a lucky last hit in once or twice if someone gets ganked while jungling or taking on Rosh, but surely no more than one or two.
Allied Hero Denies: 3-5
I've never seen it happen in a pro game, but it makes sense that it does sometimes.
Total Courier Kills: 16-20
Seems to happen every other game. Might even be a bit higher.
Longest Game Time: 71-80 mins
The longest I've seen so far was an hour, and apparently the longest from TI3 was about 76 mins.
Shortest Game Time: 17-20 mins
I've seen teams gg out earlier than this, but I'd like to think any team would at least try to put on a good show. Normally one team has pulled away by 15 mins, so it's likely that there'll be at least one team who throws in the towel around this point.
Aegies Snatches: 1-3
I've seen one already (and it was awesome), so there might be more, but I'll stick with this for now.
In A Single Game
Hero With The Most Kills: Morphling
I've seen some pretty brutal Morphlings, although he's not a common character. Batrider could be a good call too.
Hero With The Most Deaths: Puck
Puck's an aggressive ganker who's a bit flimsy so can find himself in trouble. He seems popular so I reckon he's as good a choice as any.
Hero With The Most Assists: Dark Seer
I've spotted Dark Seer a few times getting stuck in. He doesn't get picked that much, but he's a good AoE aggressive support so he'll be hitting a lot of people for small amounts of damage.
Hero With The Most Last Hits: Treant Protector
He's a solid pusher so might be the guy taking lanes solo in mid games. There are loads of choices though, and a jungler might be a better pick.
Hero With The Highest GPM: Alchemist
Greevil's Greed + Hand of Midas = Profit! Assuming someone plays him.
Hero With The Most Tower Damage: Nature's Prophet
I think a hero with loads of minions is the way to go, and while Fancy Lancer or Leshrac might get more friends NP is more common and his trees are pretty sturdy.
Hero With The Highest Total Healing: Witch Doctor
He was pretty common in the American qualifiers but seems to have gone quiet now. There are other good healers but none are any more common so Witch Doctor has my money.
Across All Games In The Qualifier
Hero With The Most Kills: Templar Assassin
There are stronger heroes for pure kills, but most get banned a lot. TA seems to get picked to counter other heroes late in the draft.
Hero With The Most Deaths: Wraith King
He seems popular this year and can get two deaths for the price of one.
Hero With The Most Assists: Shadow Demon
SD seems to be a very popular support, making almost every game I watch.
Hero Picked The Most: Mirana
Seriously, she's in every fucking game.
Hero Banned The Most: Batrider
He was monstrously powerful last year and got banned almost every game. Despite him being nerfed he's having a similar ride this year.
Hero With The Most First Bloods: Nyx Assassin
Tough call, but Nyx is fairly aggressive from the off so is as good a guess as any.
Number of Heroes Never Picked or Banned: 36-40
Christ, who knows? There are about 120 heroes aren't there? Some never seem to get played, but it only takes one guy to want to do something crazy. Apparently last year there were 40, so I've gone on the conservative side of that.

Re: The International 2014
Right, I think I might have to actually set the config up in the league before it will accept people. This means I need to set a draft time, annoyingly, and the sooner the better because the season has started. When's good for those people interested (only Roman and Bits as far as I know)? I can do pretty much any night between about 4 and 7, then from about 8 onwards. Should only take ten minutes or so since I don't expect us to put much thought into it.
Re: The International 2014
Thursday and Friday are good for me at any time, also worth noting (as i think pants mentioned) you don't need a compendium for the fantasy league as you can buy fairly inexpensive tickets to join one
Re: The International 2014
Yeah, 60p, but I'm not sure what the benefit is other than a bit of competition. And I'm not even sure if it works yet.
Re: The International 2014
Predictions close in 25 mins, but I found this thread on Reddit with a proper statistical analysis. I've changed a lot of my predictions on this basis, although some weren't bad. I'll be interested to see how accurate I would have been (but I'm not above cheating for the compendium points).
Re: The International 2014
Seen a couple European qualifiers today and both have been good games which swung drastically and led to a steamroller finish from teams who looked like they were done for early on. The second included a Russian team called Relax, and their name and logo struck me as being quite unusual - almost 5punky - for a pro team.
Re: The International 2014
A reminder to myself to put the youtube video here of the xGame Vs Hehe game from this afternoon, or a recommendation to go watch it in client if you prefer. A 50-ish-kill bonanza as Hehe take a super aggressive game to xGame resulting in a kill every 2 minutes. It gets to the point where the poor singleton commentator is missing kills because he's watching Enigma solo Roshan or a tower going down, and apologising because he just can't keep up with the action. Lots of skirmishes at the beginning, then some real end-to-end team fighting. It's only on Youtube in Russian at the moment, but it was an awesome match.
Re: The International 2014
The tournament proper has started. Some might be interested to know that they're apparently putting on 'newbie' commentators who will be a lot easier to follow. Even some of the pros are looking forward to those, and I know I am.
Re: The International 2014
this was just about to come on and say to keep eyes out for the noob friendly stream, i know one of the commentators for it is pyrion flax who does a bunch of stuff on the youtubes about dota that i enjoy watching here and there so i am extra excite for thisDog Pants wrote:The tournament proper has started. Re: The International 2014
The first MVP vs Liquid was good. MVP were ahead early on thanks to some excellent Slarkage, including a aegis steal. Liquid ground them down in the end but it was a close game, something like 57 mins. That's a long pro match.
Re: The International 2014
Just finished watching DK vs Titan, and I've never seen a game like that before. At 25 mins DK are six towers down and way behind on xp, while Titan have all towers intact. The commentator says only about 5% of games come back from this kind of disadvantage. As Titan start pushing the mid T3 DK hold them at the steps and take down the Titan carry (Pugna) with their own (Naga Siren) and suddenly boost the Siren to be the most powerful hero on the field from the bounty. For the next 20 mins DK are under siege, not leaving their base and pushing Titan's towers with Siren's illusions. At the 45 min point Titan have a full set of BKBs and the Aegis, both teams have buyback, and the anticipation is like the D-Day landings - whichever team loses the fight will probably lose the game. It's over by 50 mins, but there are some amazing team fights.
Re: The International 2014
Well, that's over for another year. Newbee destroyed VG 3-1, ending the last two games in around 15 minutes each. As the underdogs, and only a four-month-old team, I'm pleased for them. I'd rather a 'local' team won, like Alliance (Swedish) or Mouse (German), not least because they're more daring than the Chinese teams, but at least the Chinese don't drag games out to an hour.

Re: The International 2014
I missed the first game but it looked like Vici just kept using the same strategy which also got them through the playoffs over and over and Newbee punished them for it. the commentators where even like "really? again?" when vici chose their last pick for the last game.Joose wrote:Really? Big props to newbee though who went through all the former TI champions, which i can imagine in no small feat, to get to the grand finals and then rolling over a team that had played really well over the whole tourney. hopefully next year one of the EU teams will make it into the grand finals as they seem less afraid to mix things up in the draft and will fight to the bitter end watching for the other team to slip up. I respect Vici could see they where being walked over and they pretty much lost the last game before they started but if i was them i would just having a horrible nagging feeling that there could've been a huge turnaround if they just kept going as it was a very early surrender.
all in all i really enjoyed the event this year even with the slightly anti-climatic finish and I'm looking forward to the next one and hoping the EU teams took the commentators advice and "get back to work" as it would be a shame to see some of the big teams from the last few years not make it to the playoffs next time.
