World of Warplanes (Beta)

Post by buzzmong »

Just had a closed beta invite from the latest PCG, so going to have a dabble on this game.

Be interesting to see how the fight dynamics work when you no longer have hills and ditches like World of Tanks.
It'll also give me the chance to shout out "Tally Ho!" with alarming frequency.

I have another (PCG have already given one away) if anyone wants it. I wasn't that impressed when I played it, but that was ages ago.

Well, first up and not a good sign is that fact the settings for the controls, specifically the joystick page is all kinds of fucked.

Trying to remap buttons is a massive headache as for some really odd reason, it's treating moving or pressing a mouse button as a joypad analogue stick input, cue a fucking nightmare when you're trying to press OK when remapping the controller.

After litterally dozens of attemps to map my fire button, I got in game to find it's mapped it to be semi-auto, requiring a click each shot, rather than letting it work held down

I know it's a closed beta, but setting up input is something that's early alpha.

I had a number of problems with this game, but that wasn't one of them. You do have a knack of finding shit like this, you should be a tester.

If I hadn't gone to New Zealand in 2011 I would have been, as that was the only reason Codemasters didn't give me a job in their QA department (clashed with their minimum 12 week contract).

As an aside, I've now fixed the gun problem. There's some serious mapping conflicts going on (aside from the mouse being collected as analogue input).

Handily, I've figured out that the windows mappings actually work, so Joy0 is the trigger, Joy1 is physically button 1 etc... so I've gone off and manually set them up in the xml files.

I will say this, I'm glad the settings are saved to an XML file and loaded on the fly when you start a battle. As Notepad++ handily tells you when a file that's open has been changed and will then highlight the updates, it makes things easier to figure out.

Right, done some actual missions now, it's a bit buggy but I'm enjoying it.

Highlight just now happened in a 3v1. I survived by virtue of all three enemies attacking me each parking themselves into the hill top castle we were dog fighting around
