The Walking Dead

Post by Dog Pants »

This is an interesting thing. I've only vaguely heard of the game, and wasn't expecting much from it if I'm honest. Imagine my surprise, then, when PCG give it 90%. Despite being almost an interactive movie (*shudder*) it apparently tells the story so well, taking into account the decisions you make, that it more than makes up for the absence of much in the way of gameplay. Which I find interesting, because recently I've found a similar thing with SWTOR; I was predictably ground down quickly by the MMO gameplay but the stories have kept me enthralled. I just adore my camp, naive, lumbering, doo-gooding Sith Inquisitor. So maybe this would be a breath of fresh air for me, relaxing into a storyline I can influence like a Bioware RPG without the sub-par gameplay getting in the way. I've noted it for a later purchase when I don't have quite so much gaming meat on my plate, but I'd be interested in the thoughts of anyone who does play it.

Glanced at a few videos. The thing that struck me most was its ability to create the perfect atmosphere, whether it was tension, foreboding, relief etc. Very much like being absorbed in a film or tv program. The way the story played out did seem well done. I'd pick it up if I hadn't put down £80 for GW2 and D3 in the last month.

I've heard good things about this and will be playing it at some point. Apparently is expands the story of the original comics/books and has the endorsement of the author, Robert Kirkman. It's considered canon and shit. :likesitall:

Just finished the first episode and very impressed. You can recognise a heritage of point-n-click adventures in there, especially in the more quiet moments. Although you've not really got pixel hunting, you do have to search around a bit with the cursor and you can miss things if you don't take care. There's a few puzzles and doing things in a certain order, but nothing too taxing. The quicktime-type events use the same cursor system as the rest of the game so they're not out-of-place.

But more importantly it's the story and timed conversation/action choices you have to make which really made the game for me. I've not played any zombie game that really gives you the emotional tension and general fucked-up-ness of the situation. The voice-acting is well done and convincing. The way the story unfolds is very interesting, with you controlling a character who knows his past, but it's a mystery to you and you still need to respond to questions about it. People will remember if you're not honest, even if you're not sure you're lying. It's a great way of revealing the character.

If you like zombie stuff and adventures, it's a no braaaaaainer.

I'm not sure, that must be the case. It cost ~£20 and only lasted 2 hours or so. And I believe the episodes will be released on a monthly basis.

Yes, you do. On Steam you buy all of the episodes up front and you get them as they come out. All of Telltale's episodic games have done this on Steam I think.

On Xbox 360 you buy the first episode and then the subsequent episodes are delivered as DLC.
