Games of 2012

Post by Thompy »

RPS have made a pretty exhaustive list.

I'm mostly looking forward to (just from that list) Diablo 3, Guild Wars 2, Monaco, Quantum Conundrum, Metro: Last Light, Botanicula, and Carmageddon: Reincarnation.

You?

Personally:

Diablo 3 (me and the mrs put far too many hours into D2. She is looking forward to it so much we are talking about building her a proper, non laptop machine for no other reason than so that she can play properly.)
Guild Wars 2 (Ive wanted a decent MMO that isnt on the basic WoW formula for ages, and this looks like it *might* be one)
Planetside 2 (Planetside always seemed to me like an awesome idea that didnt have anywhere near the tech to make it work. Now, we have the tech to make it work)
Mass Effect 3 (The ME series is probably my favourite computer RPG series ever. The conclusion of the story is made more exciting by the fact that it feels very much like the conclusion of *my* story, thanks to the character transferring across thing)
Starcraft II: Heart Of The Swarm (Im not *as* excited by this as the others, but im a lot more confident that it wont be disappointing. If that makes sense)
The Secret World (For much the same reason as GW2. Plus I love a good bit of conspiracy bollocks)
Thi4f (I dont think the Thief series has ever let me down. Apart from the names. WTF is a Thiaf?)
XCOM (Once I stopped thinking about it as a disappointing direction to take one of the best game series of all time, and started thinking of it as a totally separate game that happens to share similar themes and a name, I got quite excited about this. I love the visuals that have come out of it so far: good retro setting and properly weird aliens.)
Shadowrun (YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS)
Salem (Im not exited so much as intrigued by this. Its such an unusual idea, with a lot of very unusual ideas for an MMO inside that, that even if its a failure I think it will be an interesting one.)

2012 has the potential to be a very expensive and time consuming year for me, if they all pan out.

:D
Mass effect 3: Genuinely excited for the same reasons stated by Joose. My ladyshep is going to complete her story at last.

Diablo 3: Never played the others, as by the time I had an interest in this sort of game it was ageing a bit. The new one looks very shiny, and I'm looking forward to doing some co-op with people.

Far cry 3: Hopefully acts and looks like the previous incarnation. I actually quite enjoyed FC2, apart from the dodgy ending.

Guild wars 2: Loved the original, let's hope that this one doesn't grind to a halt when you reach the level cap.

Prey 2: From what I've heard, it sounds like it'll be great. I hope it actually lives up to expectation.

SC2: Heart of the swarm. :D~~~

Torchlight 2: Enjoyed the original, multiplayer should only enhance it.

:O
C&C Generals 2: Please be like the first Generals. Please. You were really good and misunderstood. (Due out 2013)

I hadn't seen anything about Hawken till that video on the RPS site, but it looks pants-wettingly good. I hope they put a single-player mode in too, it looks like they have the feel of a mech down just right.

Grim Dawn might be interesting, they're the guys from Iron Lore that disbanded after they finished the Titan Quest expansion, and I believe the game's made in a similar engine. Certainly one for Deject to keep his peepers on.

Counterstrike Global Offensive: Curious more than anything. I want to see how the matchmaking and cross-platform play works out. It could be a return to a 5punky weekly classic if it takes off?

World of Darkness: Dunno, but it's made by CCP and based off a good IP. Can they fuck it up?

:(
Colonial Marines: Looks like more of the crappy AVP3 marine single-player. Cutscenes and quicktime events ahoy!

Mass effect: For all of the above reasons (my shepard is a dude though, but if I get the chance to change his appearance I might as he's pretty ugly) and more, I'm so excited by it that I even changed my desktop wallpaper to femshep. This may not sound unusual but it's worth noting that I haven't changed my wallpaper in at least three years.

Diablo III: Like Grimmie I never played any of the previous ones, so I might make this my first blizzard game ever. I feel like I have to now that my mum got me a giant diablo III mouse mat. Also, when we do co-op we're putting that sucker on youtube. No excuses this time.

Far cry 3: I'm not hugely excited by this, but I enjoyed the second one so I'll give it a try for sure.

I'm not fussed about MMO's as I always preferred a good singleplayer/co-op over an MMO, but if there's one out this year that isn't wow in any shape or form I might give it a proper try. Guild wars 2 is without a monthly sub if I remember correctly so that's a big plus for me.

Everything else: I'll wait and see.

In descending order of excitedness:

Mass Effect 3
Guild Wars 2
X: Rebirth

That's about it. Max Payne (by Rockstar), Prey, Metro, Risen, King Arthur and Bioshock might be alright, but I'm not holding my breath - they have all let me down in previous incarnations. Far Cry, Starcraft, Torchlight and Diablo's last games irked me sufficiently that I don't care that they are making new ones.

Carmageddon, Gratuitous Tank Battles and CounterStrike: GO might prove fun diversions. XCOM, Shadowrun, Tribes, C&C Generals, Syndicate and Planetside have such big names to live up to that I think they can only disappoint.

I'll be keeping my eye on the new IPs, particularly the MMOs - Amy might be the surprise hit. I don't think we'll see GTA5, World of Darkness or Stalker 2.

Mass Effect 3 - For all the above reasons.
Guid Wars 2 - Loved the original played it to death, want to see a F2P take on the giants of subscription gaming.
The Secret World - Been following its development for ages now, though it will be warring with TOR for the one sub that I am willing to maintain.
Planetside 2 - I never really got on board the first time around but I want to see something that is freeform and open rather than constrained and orchestrated like every other FPS.

If 2011 was year of the sequel, is 2012 going to be year of the trequel?

X: Afterbirth (I'm faaabulous for space sandbox games, faaabulous for egosoft, and faaabulous ships with laser guns shaped like giant cocks)
ArmA3 (I sort of have to, since I run VCB. It's also very me).
Carrier Command: faaabulous Mission (Carrier Command was one of the bestest strategy games and Bohemia will do a good job of it)
XCOM (Same as Joose, just treat it as a new game and it'll be fine, unless it's shit)
Kingdom of the Roses (if the single player is anything like as open ended and moddable as Mount My Blade Warband, this will be delicious. And it has horses).

I'm really not like the rest of you am I? :P

Goddamn this! Even better if we launch straight into it with no one having played any of the single player.

I'm finding the indie games the ones to watch, in my head trending. This may not be as accurate as I think.

Dishonoured: Looks to have potential, I'll pay attention to it on release
Planetside 2: I'm a little excited about this, but I'm setting myself up for disappointment.
Diablo III: While I'm not comfortable with some of the design decisions, I'll buy it to play with 5punkers if it catches on
Mass Effect 3: I'm a bit tired of the series now, but both previous games were good so I'm expecting to buy it
Guild Wars 2: I'm pinning my hopes on this to be the saviour of MMONGs, otherwise I may never play one again.
The Secret World: I'm not expecting great things, but I'd like to see a good game come of it.
Hawken: Could be great, or not very great.
Cartel: I loved Syndicate, but it would be one hell of an achievement to turn it into a decent game today.
Xenonaughts: I loved X-Com, and it wouldn't take a lot to turn it into a decent game today.
Mechwarrior Online: If this lives up to its potential it could be awesome. I'm not sure how it could live up to all that though.
Shadowrun: Despite being browser based, I'm keeping an eye on this. It has some potential to capture the tabletop game.
Salem: This little curiosity has the smell of Minecraft and Wurm about it, and that could make it a real surprise gem.
Gratuitous Tank Battles: I've been following the development of this. It has a good chance of being a great indie time-sink.
Prison Architect: Another interesting indie title to watch, might scratch that Sim City itch.
Carmageddon: I loved the original, and there's no reason this can't be as good.
Gotham City Imposters: I have a secret little crush on this. Looks like it could be gloriously silly multiplayer.
World of Darkness: I was interested in this, but I don't think we'll see it this year, if ever.
Stalker 2: I've never been a huge fan of the series, but I appreciate them for what they are and I would be sad if this never saw daylight. Certainly more interesting than more console FPS conversions like Syndicate and Xcom.

I too am looking forward to Xenonauts and Prison Architect along with holding out hope that Stalker 2 actually gets out.

I'm still looking forward to Colonial Marines, I just hope Gearbox have taken on board some of the critisims that have been given over their first gameplay videos and remove QTE's and other such design crutches. If not, it may prove one of the driving horses that make me dive headfirst into FPS development.

Firaxis doing a proper turn based UFO:EU update/remake?

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG
:excited: :excited: :excited:

I mean, sure it's also out on consoles, but it's certainly a turn based strategy game, so I'd imagine PC is primary platform.
