Lydia is dead and I'm glad. I was sick of her sarcastic: "I am sworn to carry your burden". Shut up and take this stack of 68 carrots!

And I'm glad I didn't grind to afford the house in Whiterun early on. When I finally got to the mage collage in Winterhold I got a free room. Shame there's no door to keep the other mages from sitting in MY CHAIR.

I found J'zargo in my chair. I killed him later and stuffed his body into that well in the chamber of elements. I might raise him as a zombie when I get bored of peering in at him so I can try out his anti-undead scrolls.

I'm guessing you won't now get the dialogue option when you report back to him on them. It was quite a good one, reminded me of GLaDOS.

Jizz'argo became my follower, so I could lead him wherever I wanted before sending him flying into the air, which wasn't as much fun as doing it in an impromptu fashion, but still kept me entertained for a good hour. He was pretty rubbish as a follower - he wouldn't use any of the magic sticks I gave him, kept bleating on about how he couldn't carry very much and wasn't very good in a fight. He would just cast shock a few times and then try and surrender to the enemy. After he tried to surrender to a bear I told him to piss off back to the academy.

Haughty Lydia was next, I hadn't got any better armour for her, save a metal hat and the only weapon I could horse her to use was the Mace of Snot I got from the Abandoned House in Markath. She fared a little better, but is really bloody noisy when I'm trying to sneak around. Also she kicked a basket across the room in my new house in Riften (I was furious and almost slew her on the spot), but I think she was just jealous of my new gingercarl Iona. I rather hope she does get killed though as me and the Mrs are sick of her eyeballing us when we're in bed. I don't know why she never goes in her own room any more...apart from it being the only part of the house that didn't get upgraded and there being half a dozen bear carcasses stuffed in her wardrobe.

I was thinking the ideal Kittys Little Helper would be a silent, healy type who stays the fuck out the way of my flailing fists, and doesn't poke me in the ribs when I'm aiming up an arrow-shot. I did have a priest dude offer to join, but I can't remember where the hell I left him.

I don't let my carls out of the house, and I'm beginning to suspect the one in Solitude is throwing parties in my absence. The first night I returned home there was a basket in the middle of the floor. No biggie.

By the fifth night there were baskets, bottles, blisterworts and bear pelts strewn willy-nilly about the place. Discipline is called for...

Please be careful of spoilery stuff, some of us (me mostly I think) are still discovering things! Do companions having specific skills? The only way I seem to be able to find out is by giving them a shit load of stuff and seeing which they pick out of preference. Lydia for example seems to favour anything enchanted with sneaking and archery, but will use swords instead of an axe, even if the latter is better.

I didn't realise anything was spoilery. If you mean my J'zargo bit, that was me just being freeform because I didn't like him. I never even did his quest line.

I've tried to be vague and not say anything specific about actual quests that would have spoiled it for me if I'd known it first. As a single player game its difficult to share your experiences without giving a few things away, but there is certainly a big random element in the game such that things may well not happen in the same way in your game. Like when I had to meet a group of (I think six) NPCs who were waiting for me so we could storm a bandit camp or something when a dragon turned up and our hunting party quickly dwindled to just me and the quest giver.

I think some companions have specific skills, such as being strong in Alteration or 2-Handed specifically, but other than the obvious differences between them being a mage or a fighter I haven't really worked out who's good at what. From experimentation as you've done, I think giving them stuff works like Fallout, where they only use stuff if they think it's "better" than what they have - which in Fallout at least meant "has a higher DPS" irrespective of enchantments, but there are certainly types of weapons they won't use if they "favour" a different sort.

I decked Iona out in Dragonbone armour, and she wields an ebony sword. I took her on myself as a test and she can almost best me, so she really is the best follower I've had by far. Maybe the Huscarl you get is better when your house is more expensive?

So what's with glass armour and weapons in Elder Scrolls? I'm not expecting it to be realistic, but I got a glass bow recently and that's just taking the biscuit. I can get passed special hardened glass being used for blades and armour, but also being flexible enough for use as bow seems a bit much. Is there lore that covers why Elder Scrolls land glass is like this?

As was explained somewhere else here, the glass is actually a type of ore that is called glass, like how the dwarves in the elder scrolls are actually a type of elves.

Dog Pants did say something about it, I wasn't reading at that time due to spoilers. Even so, flexible ceramic? It's so unrealistic. [shoots lighting bolt from hands]

Well, don't you use Malachite to make glass weapons/armour? Presumably it's mostly there for decoration on bows, like Ebony, and just indicates that it's of higher quality.

Glass Armour is made from Malachite, which is Copper ore.

No, I'm no clearer either.
