Halp...boredom inbound.

Post by Davius »

Currently in Afghan waiting for over a week for a flight home with no work to do, the 14 hour days are going to drag. Armed with an XP netbook and very limited internet connection (20 mb a day) which can be used more off peak. I'm looking for any free offline games, strat, puzzle, card (ie texas hold em, blackjack), addiction (technically not a genre but anything you find addictive) that I can download off peak and play to the death to get me through.

I tried google but typing 'free games' doesn't yield prosperous results above spam and crap. Any one know of decent apps/mini games that could fit the bill?

Yours expectantly,

Dave

My suggestion would be to grab something like WinUAE (Amiga), Gens (Megadrive), or Snes9x and play some retro games if you've got such a low limit on the transfer amount.

The Roms can be found via a quick google and are plentiful as well as small eg Amiga roms come in the Amiga Disk Format (.adf) and are 780k each.

dwarf fortess is under 10mb, free and addictive as fuck if its your kind of thing, theres openttd which again is a small filesize, free and very addictive.

if you havnt tried either of them they are both very fiddly indepth management games of sorts, dorfs is the sillier and more fun imo but the gui is harder to penetrate than a whales ass, its also the most unforgiving game ever but its part of the fun

oh yeah worth mentioning for dwarfs, if the idea of the ascii graphics makes your eyes want to stab themselves then theres a few tilesets available which make things a bit easier and clearer.

http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2431 is the one i use, that download is bundled with the game so it should all work fine after extraction, theres loads others but i find this one the clearest and most pleasing to look at

There's always SimCity 2K Rush Hour. That's still addictive as hell.

You could try a rouge-like, Nethack being the most popular I believe. You can get nicer graphic mods. My personal favourite years ago was ADOM.

id not heard of NetHack before somehow, just gave it a go and its pretty awesome, i killed rats, had rocks fall on my hard helmetted head, figured out i could use this suprising trap to kill crabs and then died trying to remount my horse after kicking a door down. i could lose alot of time to this.

it even gave me a nice picture to remember the occasion

the adventure mode to dwarf fortress is a roguelike too, which i forgot to mention before aswell, so i guess the fortress mode is a roguelike-citybuilder

gonna give that ADOM a go too as that looks to have all the best parts from dwarf fortresses adventure mode except for the targeted combat system which is the main feature to stand out to me in dorfs adventures, being able to do the usual walk into enemies to attack and itll work it out, or you can choose what to attack with, which includes all your limbs and mouth, and whatever your holding. and then pick exactly what part of the enemy to attack whether that be there arms, eyes, neck, various teeth, tails or toes. and then pulling their guts out of an open wound with your bare hands to strangle them with.
