The Minecraft Challenge

Post by Dog Pants »

I've been thinking of a way of spicing Minecraft up a bit, since we've all built our willy-towers and satisfied our need for a huge group project. So this is it, the Minecraft Challenge. A competition to build something each week based on a theme. I've only thought of the first idea so far, but you lot are smart cookies and we have a whole week to come up with the next one. So here's my challenge, 5punkers, should you choose to accept it;

Minecraft Challenge #1 - Obstacle Course

Design an obstacle course for your fellow 5punkers. The area to cover is 50 blocks long by 5 blocks wide, and the winner will be based on the difficulty and originality of the course. Devious traps which kill your fellow competitors is positively encouraged.

sounds like a nifty idea, are people alowed to have course rules? ie not allowed to use any items or only allowed to use x amount of blocks of y type etc

Can someone post the codes used for spawning items?
It'd make it a lot easier to build something trapped if we didn't have to make a base to hunt thousands of creepers from :D

Well, I believe "do not destroy the course through any other means than what's provided to you" is a given.

Can I expand downwards with the course to hide the redstone by the way?

I like this idea. Perhaps set an area for them to be built so they're all in one place? I'll see if I can get a map image generated.

You need to be an Op to spawn stuff. Anyone that wants to be involved can have Op status, bearing in mind "with great power ..." and all that. These are the commands and these are the codes.

How about 50x5 is the playing area, for the person doing the course, but the mechanisms can extend beyond that area. How's that sound?

I'm already building it, but I'm not quite interested in op as I'd probably end up spawning three large chests of cobble.

I thought we'd be making them in SP, and sharing the maps. Are we doing it on the server instead?

Making them in singleplayer would have advantages, one use mechanisms for instance. Although I don't think it's possible to spawn stuff inside the game, you'll need to use a tool to edit your inventory.

Aww, I'm already half-done with mine on multiplayer. Allow both I guess, I have no problem with manually reloading the traps on the server. And it looks good in my city.

Yay! Interest while I was at work.

Rules, I'd say you can't destroy parts of the course (or maybe you can only use fists so you can have destructible parts of the course). I didn't put any limits on the vertical so that people wouldn't be too constrained, but obviously a huge vertical ladder to slow people down isn't very imaginative. Spoodie's idea of keeping the course in the boundaries but allowing mechanics outside sounds good. Lastly I'd say build it where you like, whatever's easiest. Only my own suggestions of course.

I was going to mark out some lanes on the MP server, but I spent all my time getting back to the spawn then found my dungeon destroyed by lava and no free space to build in so I went and sulked in my cathedral instead.

Sounds fun! What's the decision on SP vs MP? Making them on the server would make it more fun seeing/trying the courses.

I'm making mine on the MP server, as is Bali. Either way works, but I suppose it's more convenient on MP.

Hmm, think we need more time for this? I've got one obstacle done and I need resources.
