Video compressor

I have a Sony Handycam, which records in a .mpg format.

I tried out Vdub as per the stickied thread, but it gives this error:

MPEG Import felcher: invalid pack at position 3: marker bit not set; possibly MPEG-2 stream

The Handycam software will export to .wmv only and gives virtually no options for size and quality.

Anyone have a fix for the error or a suggestion for another program?
