Were the tower defense levels in Warcraft a mod, or an addon? They certainly changed the gameplay, but used assets from the original game.

Custom map.

To me, mod insinuates that someone's changed the game in some way.
Custom maps are just maps made using the resources provided, like a sandbox game-maker.

this discussion seems to have travelled back in time!

i still say anything for a game thats not made by the original developers are mods, just makes sense that way to me that something made by a 3rd party is a mod, and saying its not a mod its a custom map is semantics.

thats like if someone put a new gameplay mechanic into a game and someone said its not a mod its "custom gameplay"

obviously with a game like little big planet where level creation and sharing is a part of the core gameplay it blurs the line a little, and i can kind of see how as they release dev kits for alot of games you can say the same for any game

but on every mod website ive ever been to custom maps are in them as a subcatagory

Blizzard call them custom maps, just using in-game terminology.

There used to be SC "mods" where people would re-skin the game and make brand-new units by editing the .dat files.
That's a mod.

That's because you're on a mod website. If you went to an SCII website, you'd see the maps under the "custom maps" subcategory :P

Grimmie is sort-of right. The beta is up for the yankees, however, it doesn't work for 95% of the people. The beta is down for Europe and Asia.

Fucking hell man, it's friday, if it's not up today it's going to be up on monday the earliest.. but I'm going away on monday and coming back on the 19th. Which would mean I'm absolutely skipping this beta phase.

I lost my love for RTS games around the Tiberium Sun/Age of Empires 2 era, but admittedly I haven't played many since. As Dog Pants said, I like to take my time in most games, and in an RTS that means enjoying the slow base build up process which just doesn't fit into multiplayer mode.

Might try it might not we'll see!

Starcraft.. Slow? :?

We're usually embroiled in a massive rape-battle six minutes into the game.

Think you misunderstood me :) I know there's rush tactics and it isn't generally slow, but that was my point - I don't like rushing and perfer to play slowly, which doesn't work well in multiplayer!

Exactly, WR is agreeing with what I said about not liking being zerg-raped while we're still pondering over which is the best place to put our power stations so not to block the view of the sunset from the HQ building.

EDIT: Ninjad to it.

Ah, I see. Misread it :)

Rise Of Nations is a very good slow-paced RTS, if you've not tried it.
It was one of the last games that clung to the 2D isometric style of games before everything went 3D.

I didn't misread it, I misinterpreted it. :P

Ah, well, yes, Starcraft is really not Sim City.

Grimmie, I just realized you didn't get the team random 10 thing, it shows up when someone else in the party gets it as well. So your missing portrait isn't a bug.
