Data plans and you....

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Data plans and you....

Post by Akiakaiu »

A friend of mine is looking into one of those mobile broadband plans and I was wondering how much of a plan she would need to just surf the web, email and use facebook apps. She doesn't sweep anything, just your basic websurfing. Is a 5gig plan overkill? 250meg seems like too little too.

250mb is quite a lot when you're just loading webpages. You'd be surprised how little browsing uses. Unless you're doing it all the time I'd bet 250MB is enough.

I suspect it depends on which apps she uses, and how much.

I'd bet farmville or lots of gallery browsing would quickly push it out of the 250MB range.

That's what I'm afraid of, farmville and mafia wars et al. I can see them using up that kinda fast. I'm not sure how the cache would play into that. I've never looked into data plans before and I'm not sure how to even track how much she uses daily so she can get a good guesstimate.

How much is the overage? If it isn't bad, I'd say try the 250MB and see if she goes over. If she does, bump her up to the next plan. If not you're good.

You could do it the other way around, get the 5GB plan, and if she is under the 250MB drop her down.

With my occasional web browsing on my LG Vu, I don't think I use more than 5MB a month.

$0.01/Meg for the little plan, $0.05 for the 5gig. I found a freeware program thingy gonna test it out over a night or two of what she does. All the plans require such and such length of commitment.

It's stupid that it's $35/mo for 200meg or $60 for 5gig with a year plan. There should be more of a middle ground. :x

This is for one of those lappy card/usb jobs. Since she can't get the wi fi off her sister a few houses away.

That's kinda the point, you might as well get the 5GB for the extra, so you do :P
