Not at all inspired by John's visual homage to Day of the Tentacle, I find myself compelled to present this large roster of attractive images from a game I'm rather taken with. UFO: Enemy Unknown, also known as X-COM: UFO Defense, is an exciting new science-fiction tactical action game from British developers Mythos, due for release in October 1994. You'll need to make sure your IBM-compatible personal computer has been upgraded to 2Mb of RAM and a VGA monitor for this one!

The trick with UFO I found was to research laser rifles asap, then move onto the big laser cannons before researching anything else, although the next one was usually alien alloys so you could build the first armour, allowing your soldiers a chance of actually not dying from a frontal attack.
The laser rifles are excellent troop weapons due to accuracy (means you can use snap shot all the time and get 2 or 3 shots off) and lack of ammo requirements, and while the cannons aren't that good for aircraft they were the most profitable item in the game based upon cost and time to produce.
One of the more standard tactics people hit upon was to build a base solely for manufacturing, storing and selling them. Set max production runs per month and flog them all. Rinse and repeat for muchos cash to spend on research and equipment.
