2000 words minimum please FatherJack. I had a quick go of MP over the weekend and it's okay, your standard Quake DM affair, frantic fun but ultimately very shallow.

Eurogamer has a review of the SP which is pretty accurate from what I've seen with a good proporation of the game completed. I need to go through again on a harder difficulty, it's just too easy on the second diffculty setting.

Haven't actually managed to play against anyone yet - no games show in the in-game browser. I don't know if I need to open up ports or what.

Had a go of FEAR MP DM and was rather chaotic, but wanted to try the other game modes before comparing, as non-slomo DM isn't really the selling point.

Ran around a few levels of Q4 DM and they look rather good - Q3DM17 (The Longest Yard) returns, plus a rather tasty remake of Q2DM1 as Over The Edge. Much smoother and more responsive on my PC than FEAR, and the levels look a lot better too - the MP FEAR levels were at odds with the design seen in SP, some being a bit blocky and reminiscent of HL1 mods like Action.

I'll try using XFire to connect to games tonight.

Quake 2 - style Total Conversion now to be ported to Quake 4:

Edit: talking of noCD patches I hear they have some at www.megagames.com under "PC Game Fixes" - rather a popup-intensive site though, I'm told.

It worked straight away for me, I have all out-going ports open though.

seta net_master0 "192.246.40.28:27650"

in the autoexec.cfg file in the q4base dir did it for me. Guessing it tries to resolve at install time, and was only (later) unblocked by the firewall when I first ran it.
