space arcade-y shooter where your weapon is generated by an algorithm.

Impressive, though it's not entirely random, there's just a very high amount of variables.

uuh, two things strike me as odd about that statement:

1) Did it actually claim to be random at any point? I saw mention of genetic algorithms (aiieeee!) but didn't see "random" mentioned. Could just be me though.

2) Why does a huge amount of variables have any effect on how random it is?

Exactly. It's not trying to be random. Truly random weapons wouldn't be all that interesting, difficult to do, nor fun. It generates them based on your usage of previous weapons which is totally different. It doesn't evolve them either, which is the really interesting bit.

mini review: generic 2D shooter action, horrific controls. the weapon generation is interesting, there are a lot of shitty weapons being generated, but you can switch them fast enough that it's alright and you'll pick up something better pretty soon.

decent distraction for 30 minutes.

Genetic algorythms or not, 99% of the generated weapons are no more than eye-candy. The starter one is the only one remotely useful.

that isn't quite true. I got a few that fired a shot straight out and a couple that lingered by the sides, essentially creating a barrier from incoming shots. I just can't figure out why I get guns that shoot out the side.

:P Normally the guns fire at your cursor, but some of them fire off to one side (like 90°) or the opposite direction you aim in.
