Perhaps if it was yanked out particularly hard and enough times by tripping it would fray. It sounds similar to people blame Nintendo for TVs with Wiimotes embedded in the screens.

It's more likely general use flexing it back and forth that causes the problem, rather than the occasional pulling out by people tripping over it.
