The upcoming PC game debate and discussion thread

Post by Lateralus »

Since there are so many games coming out in the next couple of months, I was wondering which ones people are looking to get. Personally, I can't afford more than a couple, and so am currently looking at COD5 and Fallout 3.

COD5 interests me because the single-player for COD4 was great, and I really like the engine and cinematic style so hope that this will be just as good. However, the clincher here is also that it will have a multi-player format too, and games to play with other 5punkers has been what's missing from my PC recently. I gather that it has a co-op campaign mode which I think is a great idea in theory (although need to see how it's been set up in practice), as well as normal MP TDM type goodness. Although it has definitely died down of late, I've had lots of fun playing COD4 and hope that COD5 will reincarnate those lols.

Fallout 3 interests me because it's made by Bethesda who have a history of high quality games (in my opinion) and because so many people have raved about the earlier games. I never actually played the originals, and given that I have no nostalgia to nurture I can't see myself being interested in them now, no matter how good the story may be. However, this looks good, and since the original Far Cry didn't really grab me, Fallout takes the prize.

I know there are several others floating around on the horizon, so what else is coming up that's worth considering, and what are you guys looking to get? I'm hoping for one solid SP game, and one great MP game that lots of 5punkers will enjoy so that we can get back to filling the TS server on a regular basis again.

In addition to new games, I'm hoping that life will become a bit less hectic soon so that I can look to join in with CS:S and whatever else gets 5cheduled regularly. SWAT is getting reinstalled this weekend for a start.

i'm getting pretty much everything because, like all students, i'm incredibly rich and can afford all things.

First up is Far Cry 2, which I don't know much about. It's a shootan game with efforts towards "realism" and free-roaming, though, so I can't see it being anything below average.

COD5 is a cert. I'm particularly looking forward to the co-op, but I'm sure the multiplayer will be good too. Hopefully there'll be something new mode-wise.

I too have never played a Fallout, but I'm unlikely to get this one unless it's spectacular. It's on my radar but I haven't decided yet.

Left 4 Dead is also a cert. Again, co-op is the focus for me. Demo out soon, I hear.

I should be getting Mirror's Edge, pending good reception on consoles.

F3 is a cert, got the pre-order in ages ago for the collectors edition. Shame on you lot who havn't played the originals, the first 2 are actually some of the best pc games ever made.

FC2 is on the radar, free-roaming sounds fun and I also want to play with the propogating fire and burn entire plains to ash.

CoD5 is made by Treyarch, so no matter how good CoD4 was it's irrelvent as they didn't make it (Infinity Ward did) and they've not got a great track record, I'll be awaiting 5punky reviews, but the promise of Pacific combat in WWII is alluring.

Mirrors Edge looks different and could be a break from the norm, just depends on how well the free running is implemented, whether it seems natural (eg, Bullet Time in Max Payne 1 was) or forced.

L4D should be awesome.

Berk gave me a beta key for CoD5 on the 360 yesterday. I can confirm it's good and much the same as the previous, except for yesteryear, flames, dogs and tanks. I'll write something better when I can.

I've done the logical thing, bought them all :)

FC2, F3, CoD5 and GTA4 are pre-ordered. I have unreasonable amounts of want for all of them.

Mirrors edge worries me, I'm half expecting it to do an assassins creed and suck in a deep and meaningful way.

I'd quite like for it to do an assassin's creed in the "jumping around across rooftops is fun as hell" kind of way, but NOT do an assassin's creed in the "storyline and gameplay are repetitive pieces of shit" kind of way.

I've pre-ordered FC2 and GTA IV and will be keeping a very interested eye out for L4D and CoD5 and will probably get them once it has been confirmed as both fun and 5punky :)

They are a bit annoying but also fairly easy to kill, once you learn to check your surroundings when you hear barking. I had 4 coming it me and they all lined up in a narrow alley so I was able to kill 3 with a rifle and someone else killed the last. They don't knock you down but 2 bites and your dead I think.

I'll be getting Far Cry 2 , GTA 4 and Left 4 Dead definately. I'll more than likely also get cod 5, fallout 3, mirrors edge and bionic commando but I'll wait to see what 5punkers and other reviewers say first. I also still need to get stalker clear sky and spore.

No idea when I'll buy them all though, first I need to fully recover from this RSI and then I need a new PC. Spore will probably be the last one I buy since I plan to wait until they release a gold edition with all the expansions in a few years time.

Edit: Somehow forgot L4D

The only PC game I'm immediately buying will be left 4 dead. I'm not entirely sold on CoD5, and most of the other games I'm only half interested in at best (mostly due to my pc getting on a bit).

However, both of them use the CoD4 engine, therefore there isn't really much to fuck up. Maybe level design, but that was mostly good in Treyarch CoDs.

It looks the same, feels the same and the levels I've seen are very well designed. They have lots of routes and I quickly learned the basic layout. In fact the level design is the best thing I've seen so far.

Although this is only multiplayer. SP could be gash.

FC2 for now, already preordered.

I'll wait to hear what you lot have to say about F3. I didn't enjoy bioshock as much as I thought, and I'm sorta expecting a similar type game for some reason.

L4D I will probably buy at some point too.

The new C&C I will probably sweep unless they take that silly DRM out.

Fallout 3 definitely.

COD5 possibly depending how popular it becomes on 5punk, but only for the coop stuff - if they don't do coop on console only and forego PC, as has happened before.

Other than that probably be bashing pixies in WotLK and continuing my quest for domination in Eve.

COD5: Probably only for the multiplayer, if it's any good. I hated COD4 SP.
Chances of buying: 70%

L4D: It's trying to do a lot, and that usually ends badly. I can see it having a short 5punky span, but I hope I'm wrong 'cos I love the idea.
Chances of buying: 85%

Fallout 3: As with L4D, it's trying to do a lot. RPG and FPS often turn into a weak solution of the two, but it has great pedigree so there is hope.
Chances of buying: 80%

Mirror's Edge: I don't know a lot about this, but it sounds like Assassin's Creed. Is it a console conversion? I'll wait for the reviews but I'm not expecting greatness.
Chances of buying: 40% if it's not a console conversion, 10% if it is

Far Cry 2: Looks great, reviews are raving about it. Doesn't really grab me though. Still, if I have the time I'll pick it up.
Chances of buying: 80%

WotLK: I'll probably get it one day, but not on release. I doubt there's much content for me at the level I am. However, if all the content in it is end-game stuff like raids and instances, I'll probably not bother.
Chances of buying: 85%, eventually

GTA IV: San Andreas really put me off, but there's been a long time between and they've had a good chance to put things right. I'm expecting great things for most people, but I retain a healthy cynicism.
Chances of buying: 85%

Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3 are my definite picks. Left 4 Dead looks like it will be soupherb. Fallout 3 should be really good as well.

Far Cry 2 is a possible buy, depending on if it's omgwtfbbq awesome or not. Demigod also looks interesting to me, I'll need to know more about it before I buy it.

If I was only buying two it would probably be fallout 3 and cod5.

However I'm buying both of them and farcry 2 and left4dead.

Very probably sweeping dead space and gothic 3:Forsaken gods. I've just bought £30+ of books (which I shall mention in the relevant thread) and I'm feeling a bit poor.

GTA looks very shiny, and a bit more forgiving than the last one. Possible buy on that. Seems a bit too serious business. I enjoyed the top down run stuff over old school stuff a lot more. Hawaiian shirts and phil collins as you perform a drive by in vice citywas pretty fucking sweet however.

editz for words and a bit of clarification for those that didn't perhaps play the previous gta's (although I can't imagine many that didn't).
