Fista X64

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Fista X64

Post by Dr. kitteny berk »

Actually seems pretty good, I've had a few issues so far, but only a couple of things that just don't work.

Then again, some of the issues are ATI driver related, different, but no worse than nvidia issues.

Stuff that does work:
Most stuff

Games that work (all I've tested)
CoD4
STALKER
Joint Ops
PORQ
WoW
TF2
UT04
Spore
CoX - AA appears to be bust, works otherwise (driver issue, AFAICT)
CoD:UO - Went slow on brecourt, fixed by default driver settings.

Stuff that doesn't work:
XBCD, because of the excessive driver signing for X64, can be worked around, but I've had no luck. The MS xbox360 controller should work though.

nzb-o-matic (untested, known not working) using newsleecher instead.

Older versions of coretemp, lots of errors that don't stop. needs process kill.

Haven't had any issues so far. You'll get all the generic doomsayer trash from people on the internet but once you actually use it, you realise it's actually fine.

I must say it's considerably better than before (I tried RTM, and a while after release, but not SP1 until now)

It's getting there, but still not quite mature enough for general consumption, IMO.

Unfortunately, some of the stuff, like the X64 driver-signing is most annoying, and the ways to work around it aren't really suitable or desirable for most people (running in test mode, signing own drivers) but few people are likely to need to do that.

Figured it might be worth updating this a bit now I've had a week with Fista.

*deep breath*

It's actually pretty good.

I've not had many problems, Only really keeping my windows XP install as a backup

Still getting an occasional BSOD, but I can't pin them down to Fista, mainly seem to be hardware (which is to be expected when folding on a massively overclocked machine) not folding has helped this a lot.

Hardware compatibility is mostly fine, even got my old xbox controller to work with some effort.

It's taking a bit of getting used to the new start menu and naming in the control panel and stuff, but not impossible.

I've only been asked to activate twice, and both times I've told it to fuck off.

No major issues with File sharing, but "Do you want to move or copy files from this zone?" won't fuck off.

The Definable bad bits:
Network was fucking slow for a while, but this fixed it nicely.

Fista has a built in defrag that's scheduled for 1AM one evening, that's fucking annoying when you're trying to play games. Not to mention it's pretty crap, use O&O instead.

Basically, if you have a fast machine and are about due a windows reinstall, Fista might be worth a look, I've had a few non-critical problems, YMMV.

I hate to say it, but I actually like this OS.

The sound quality is considerably better than XP, Probably not enough for a lot of people to notice, but it's there.

I'll admit it, I use x64 as well, and since SP1 came out and fixed a load of bugs it's been stable as hell, I've only had a problems when installing Mass Effect, and a graphics driver update fixed that. Pretty damn good, all in all.

Yeah, It's really not bad any more, much much better than it used to be.
