Internet Prescients

Post by Dog Pants »

I'm amazed by the amount of people out on the intercock who are feverishly ranting about how shit Spore is. If even 1% of them have played it I'll eat my hat. It seems to happen a lot though, and I don't understand why. With about half a dozen highly anticipated games about to be released I can see there being a feding frenzy of it.

It doesn't seem to happen here, luckily. Even our Spore naysayers have a reasonable cause to dislike the game - it's been overhyped. But on other forums I see so many people slating aspects of the gameplay that they don't even know exists - one I saw hated it because it was nothing more than a social networking site with a bit of a game attached. What?

I've noticed it with games after release too. Every time I see a thread about the worst game ever, someone will declare it's Half Life 2. Now, it might not be for everyone but HL2 is lightyears away from being the worst game ever. Mention World of Warcraft on any gaming forum and the whole thread will degenerate into arguments about how "omg it's shit" or "wtf it rules". It's like watching a non-ironic version of Stoat's internet argument generator.

I don't really know where I'm going with this, I just needed to vent my spleen I think. Maybe I should retitle the thread the Dog Pants Hates The Internet Blog.

I cannot read youTube comments anymore, it destroys my little faith in humans with the sheer stupidity and utter crap people write in their comments.

I take Youtube as a given really. Expecting them to write stupid comments makes it so much easier to deal with. Thing is, I suppose, is that stuff like Youtube is a wider circle of humanity. I expect it is the only place many people post, and so it's less of a reflection of people on the internet and more of people in general. Same goes for sites like BBC's Have Your Say.

I suppose taken in the greater context, people who frequent the internet aren't quite as bad as the general public. A poor state of affairs.

People like their own thoughts and opinions, and they love making them known. Some people think about what they're saying before they say it, and others just like to throw it out there and think about it later.

Combine that with the facts that 1) a lot of people on the internet really do have absolutely nothing better to do and 2) it's easier to hate something you don't know about than like it, and you get this sort of thing happening.

I think as far as stuff like this is concerned, its just because people want to seem smart. For some reason that ive never quite got my head around, being excited about things is seen as something that stupid people do, whilst being cynical and expecting everything to be shit is seen as somehow intelligent.

To me, having any firm view on a game that isnt released yet and you have not played: *that* is stupid.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I see it. I've considered this since I went to see the remastered Star Wars on its opening night, and heard several people leaving the cinema declaring how shit it was. It's Star Wars for fuck's sake! How could they not have known if they'd like it or not? It had been out for 25 years!

I don't think Spore will be shit, but the enormous amount of hype it generates is a killer. I don't like games which say for 6 months that it's going to be awesome liek this and that and that and omg that and it's going to have this and that revolutionary function and it invents 60 different cures to cancer and Chickenz syndrome, and when it's released, it turns out to be rather average. I do like games however that don't get any hype at all, and still turn out to be at least average if not good.

I think Spore will be distilled down to make it so causal-friendly that the charm, intelligence and execution that would have made it better will be spread thin to the point that a potentially excellent game will be very good, but ultimately underwhelming.

It's mainly the media that generate hype though, much as the PR execs would like it to be themselves. I do agree, though, that too many games are overhyped. How many have ever lived up to expectations? I can't think of any. Best thing is to try to avoid the hype. I've successfully managed that with Spore, less so with Warhammer.
