During a bout of iPhone willy-waving down the pub recently, someone observed that there are two things that always get released for any piece of hardware that's hacked to run homebrew code, and everyone duly installs them. Then doesn't do anything with them except show them off to people in the pub. The first is Quake. It used to be Doom, but in the 3D age the big Q seems to have become the de facto way of demonstrating that a given piece of hardware has something decent under the hood. Touchscreen controls mean iPhone Quake isn't hugely playable, but it does look amazing.

The second, and the source of my point, is SCUMMvm, the esteemed emulator for the old LucasArts adventure games. I suspect everyone who installs SCUMMvm, whether it's for their PC, their PDA, their PSP or whatever, has a favourite game they install alongside it. For many it's Day of the Tentacle, and God knows there's a legion of Monkey Island die-hards, but for me it's always Sam & Max Hit The Road. Except I never play it. I only watch the intro.

It is funny, yes. And I think some of the animation was beautiful.
Sadly the Sam & Max games are a bit beyond me- I just don't seem to have the specific logic at hand that point and click games demand.

And in a discussion about voice acting- no mention of Psychonauts?

:above: but specifically Sam and Max, I can do DOTT and Monkey Island pretty successfully.

I have SCUMMvm on my PSP, but haven't managed to get Monkey Island installed yet. I should try again. However, I do have Gran Turismo 2 on it which is nearly as good, but less entertaining. Having any of those games on a mobile phone would be awesome though.

Obviously DOTT and MI. Best adventure games ever.

Sam & Max: Hit the Road wasn't really all that good. I ended up in the unfortunate situation of picking up three million random objects and rubbing each to everyone's dicks to see what gives them an erection.

On the other hand the new Sam & Max series are pretty good, except for the very first episode. Since it's episodic, you can't really get into the HTR situation of having a fuckload of useless items, you'll have 6-10 at most and the next step is always perfectly logical. Oh, and it's genuinely funny. Unless you're an FPS chimp, and in that case, please USE gun ON self.

I might try them at some point. The original Sam and Max (S&M?) baffled the shit out of me, so something a bit less random might work.

DOTT was ace though. See also: Grim Fandango.

Loom was also very good, and from what i remember, it was LucasArts being serious, rather than playing for laughs.

Sadly i can no longer play it. not because it doesn't work, but because i'm NEVER going back to EGA graphics...
