Backing up PS3 hard drive

Post by The Incredible... »

i may have posted before that my mate took his PS3 to america and seems to have fried it, or it was damaged intransit i don't know, but it doesn't work and he wants to send it off for repair, but is worried about losing his saves.

does anyone know if its possible to backup a ps3 hard drive?

i was thinking if he got a 2.5" notebook USB HDD cage thingy, for using a notebook drive as a usb drive on the pc, then gets and external usb HDD to back it up on to that is at least as big as the ps 3 drive (cos he doesn't have enough left on his computer for a 60gb backup would that work?

Did he take a uk spec one over? I take it he used a step up volt dobber? Would they even fix those under warranty in merka?

If he mentions it when he takes it for repair then they might put a note on it so they don't just bin it and give him a new one, but as for cracking it open to get at the hdd, thats a bad idea.

Does a ps3 have a file transfer option to even let you move the files to a usb attached hdd?

/unhelpful.

Probably could image the entire drive, but it would be a pointless exercise if that thread is to believed as it looks as if they're tied into individual ps3s.

yea its a uk spec and he used a voltage dobber

i was suggesting sending it to an independent repair place, as to get it replaced he would have to send it back ehere to get it sent to sony uk, plus he said they would replace rather than repair, which would mean he gets a crappier version, cos they would replace his 60gb with a 40gb which won't play his ps2 games

taking the HDD out isn't hard, it tells you how to do it in the manual, i think it might void the warranty, but the warranty isn't much use anyway if they would only replace it with a lower spec model

i THOUGHT i had heard of people doing it when they discovered that you could whack in any old 2.5" drive. people were copying their saves and stuff over on to the new drive

Sounds like even Partition Magic won't read the drive, so imaging won't work either, as it's likely the new PS3 would reformat the cloned drive in any case.

I guess it's to stop people copying DLC they've bought through the Playstaion Store, which will be redownloadable if you use the same username.

There are a number of save game download sites, although usually they have 100% completed games on them and some game saves aren't copyable.
