but I'd test the onboard out first, it's getting rather good these days.

Got the bits yesterday and had it all up and running shortly after (new toys cannot leave alone, did it in my lunch break

went with the second mobo and processor and the first RAM and Graphics card. Tis now whizzzy woosh, only installed oblivion but running that at full tilt is niiiice. Will be trying CoDness later. So far on Fista's points system it is 5.7 (brought down to that by the proc, everything else is 5.9)
One slightly disturbing thing is the cold boot; the machine powers on noisily (but thats to be expected I have a Raptor X HD in there) for 2 seconds then dies then a second later only to restart quietly and boot normally. This is my first machine with core 2 duo and also first with PCI-X so not sure if that is normal. First time I had to go change my pants

That is a tad weird, maybe just a mobo thing for clearing dust from fans. My setup doesn't start the fan on my cpu until it's warm enough to start needing it, I can be onto my first post on 5punk before it decides it's warm enough to need to run, this did scare me until I used multiple temp checkers and found that the fan was starting at a sensible temperature, so I left it alone.

Not too unusual, my brother's pc does what Anery's does everytime you properly turn off the mains to the pc via an external switch (or the psu switch if it's got one).

We shall see, so far no CRC errors so the CD problem may be fixed. Will attempt to run the install for my old ADSL modem when I can get out of the bat cave.

That's fairly common I think, the restart doesn't sound right, but a lot of mobos and graphics cards will set their fans to 100% until their bioses have loaded and temp monitoring has kicked in.

That way nothing dies if something freezes.

Are you sure it turns off? it could just be really bloody quiet, my old pc did that and then the loudest thing in there until it warmed up was the 40mm nb fan, the noise was akin to a travel hairdryer being used at the other end of the street in a house with thick walls.

Yup, like buzz said, if you dc and rc the power then turn it on it powers up for a few then reboots itself and operates normally from then on in. It is not a major problem, though, I did have to re-install XP for my ADSL modem
