This. I find it far more unsettling than anything like hostel or saw, my mind is far more capable of shitting me up than me watching someone getting cut on with a chainsaw. The emotional suspense is held throughout, with the occasional explosion of violence or something really freaky happening.

The gruesome stuff like Hostel doesn't float my boat, something that makes me cringe like that isn't what I look for in a movie. The Shining is one of the scariest films I've ever seen, and only two or three have even made the list.
Coincidentally it's in my DVD player right now because I put it on the other night while hammered. Turns out the friend who was visiting has actually been to that hotel but has never seen the film, so I put it on to scare the shit out of her.

i always watched those kind of films for the fun factor/technical side. the only other films that do that are david lynch movies, and i don't even know why. however, the supposedly superscary japanese movies like the ring and the grudge etc, fail to impress me completely. everytime i hear japanese people have a conversation, i get a headache. don't know why either.TezzRexx wrote:Yeah the Shining scares me much more then any really gory horrors. Seems to push all the right scare buttons in all the right places
