Nvidia here, just because it was recommended. I stopped being a hardware fanboy years ago.

I did once own an ATI Rage II coupled with a Voodoo (1, 2 and 3 at various points IIRC). My mate had a Banshee and I laughed at him for being shit.

Well my personal experience with ATI has been pretty damn good starting from the day i shelled out £300 on a 9800pro . I have nothing against Nvidia really, the G4 MX440 did well enough til i bought my 9800 and the 6600GT did a sound job too.
I'm happy with my 2900XT even if Berk isn't, its not as noisy as the 1900xtx and it runs Crysis without any qualms. If I could be arsed, I would probably do some benching myself to see if the performance has been improved with the new drivers and the GB of DDR4 my little beauty has.

I'm running a Radeon X1600 Pro I got for $120 a year and a half ago. it's done a poor to OK job. I was going to get an 8800GT to replace it, but a sudden massive drain on my money and the complete sold-out-ness of 8800GTs means I'll probably get a Radeon HD 3850 , because it should let me keep my current PSU instead of needing a new one, saving me an extra $70 in top of it being roughly $100 less.

Was more likely an S3 of some flavour.

Probably, Voodoos were rarely installed in store-bought PCs. My Techworks 3dfx Voodoo2 with 12MB was kick-ass at the time, and lasted from about Quake to HL, when I got a GF1. I think it cost £95, work bought the GF, at probably around £300.
