Hmm, just found out I'm 1/2 mile from my exchange. Is that likely to have a serous detrimental effect on my interwebs speed?

kinda.

Line quality matters more, then line length (remember, the actual distance from the exchange can mean very little - it's possible your line goes all the way around town twice before getting to you, they're not laid with any logic whatsoever)

Also, most important is often your internal phone extension wiring, (and removing the ring wire) as that can often be as old as the house and made of crap.

1/2 a mile?

pfffft.

4 frigging miles from the exchange. And I know I'm right on the limit of the line length, I just can't be arsed to go get that figure.

Maybe your current provider can regrade you to an ADSL Max/Max Premium service so you don't have to faff around and still get the low latency etc that you want?
It's about 1km, but I don't have a BT phone line, so have only looked at non-ADSL options.
