odd bandwidth thing.

at my house we've got bandwith restrictions or whatever it's called. it just means that we can only download about 40 gb every month. you know what i'm talking about. there are three people using the internets; me, my mum's laptop is connected to the wireless (as is mine) and my little brother uses the old computer that is directly connected to the net. of all these people, i am the one who downloads the most. but for some reason we're always over limit about halfway past the month. (every 9th of the month it resets) we all know about the limit and therefore pay attention; still, unnormal amounts of stuff get downloaded; the main pc is a bit old, and there's fuckloads of crap on it, so what i'm worried about is;

-is somebody stealing our internets? if so, how can i check this?
-or is there some kind of trojan/other thingy that downloads copious amounts of stuff?

i should note that our old pc is a compaq and according to pc-man drivers are a tad hard to find for that particular pc.

Most likely someone is stealing your megahertz.

Best way to check is by logging into your router and seeing what's connected.

May also be worth fettling your wireless security. (dunno what's best, someone else might know)

Possibly worth getting a bandwidth monitoring app and installing it on all your computers (but i forget the name of the good ones)

In short: Berk is useless today.

Dependent on laptop age, what security they support will change, but if you can get them onto aes wpa-psk, then thats the most secure, and handily, its the least annoying encryption method. Its just a case of going into your router, normally ie/ff then 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.11.1 in to the address bar, and finding the security bit, normally in the wireless section. As for trojans, a dedicated trojan scanner, sweep for one that you have to pay for, they generally cost because they're better. This tcp/ip viewer from microsoft should help a bit as to whats connected/connecting. It'll take a while to sort out whats what, but I think it labels critical things that shouldn't really be stopped.

No! Be subtle, go into the router and ban his pc, if its pr0n or similar, he'll either have to own up (make sure a parent is near by) or try and sort it out himself, which he won't be able to do. It's a valuable life lesson he must go through.

well, actually, he just uses the main computer, so is there a way to make sure he only downloads about as much as i pre-set it, and make it so that he never finds out?

Er, no, I do't think there is. I honestly can't think of a way that's physically possible, if he does direct connect to the internet, then the only way to stop him would be to unplug it. If he's through the router you control, then you could use a program thats aimed at parents to auto lock sites/shut off the pc after a certain amount of time/stop downloads from certain sites etc etc, if he has little knowledgeof how to stop this, then that might help. Or you could go back to the hammer method, it may be easier. :lol:

Oh and yeah, my advice um.. well it depends very much on the technical knowhow of your brother, but with my sister I seem to be able to get away with unplugging her from the router for a couple of weeks and tell her that "Her internet is broken but mine isn't cos I know more than she does". Might be worth trying that? See if it still falls off the limit early?
Or apply for unlimited broadband if you're out of contract months?
