HULP!

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Nothing in there jumps out at me as evil. (but i'm sure other people will look closer)

Unfortunately, to be able to tell what's causing the issue, we'd probably need to know what process(es) are eating the cpu.

It could just be that the occasional bursts of cpu use is just windows doing house cleaning or indexing or something (also, I find opening the task manager often causes cpu usage to spike)

Yeah I'm kinda leaning towards the belief that I knocked something lose in my PC and now its back in place.

Very scary though, I thought i'd killed the motherboard whilst opening it and tinkering yesterday with the display going tits up.

Glad it's all back on an even keel.

One thing though, after looking through your HijackThis I recommend you look at this article and especially it's conclusion.
