One of my memory sticks packed up a while ago and for one reason or another I have decided to ship in some new stuff and, given that Bioshock is luring me towards becoming an 8800 cupcake, I figure I may as well get one of those as well.

Here's the rub though, I have no idea about hardware any more so I need advice. I want 2 gig of memory and good 8800, budget is not really an issue but I'd like to keep it to under £400-ish if possible. That said, if an extra 50 quid here and there will temper any compromise, I'd be happy to stump up the extra cash.

Current spec is:
Shuttle SN25P
BFG 7800 GTX
and other stuff

A good place to start would be overclockers co.uk. I've recently upgraded quite substantially and had no probs with these folks.

Memory wise, they do a good line in matched pairs of memory - I bought 2x 1gb sticks of Corsair as a matched pair and it's been spot on. More info <a href="http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productli ... =&mfrid=10"> here</a>

8800 wise, my brother's just bought one from OC, a GTS though I think. Seems to be running fine and does make things look VERY pretty.

Anyway, unfortunately DDR memory isn't cheap any more, but something like This should work nicely.

However, real problems are likely to appear when you try to fit an 8800 into a shuttle, chances are it won't fit (there's also a risk it'll eat the PSU pretty sharpish)

This will give you an idea of the 8800's size (the small looking card is a 7900gt)

Looking at the picture from Sheriff's link, I can't see a 8800 fitting, as it's roughly twice as long as where the back of the PCI-e socket comes to, so that would have it reaching almost to the front of the case, which is unfortunately where the CPU is sitting.

That right-wing fucker will never see a penny of my money (thanks for the help though).

And KB, I figured size would be a problem (twss). I can just about manage a dual slot card but had forgotten about the length. Piss. Do you reckon I might be better off waiting for a full Fista upgrade job and making do with just the RAM for now?

I have been considering a complete DX10 overhaul but I *really* like my Shuttle. I might try to spec up a new rig today and see where I stand, price-wise.

just googled a bit, apparently an 8800* will fit in an sn25p.

Apparently makes everything run really hot though, and you'd need that 400w psu they do for shuttles now.

*with the stock cooler, not one of the ac3s ones

other thought: 8800 is cpu limited by about everything. probably only worth doing if your current card is dead or you're planning a proper upgrade in the nearish future.

Probably, yes. but without the Fista.

I think shuttle do a few jobbies now that'll happily eat a core 2, dunno about 8800s fitting though.

SD39P2 looks like it might be a good place to start, their spec sheets say some 8800s will fit (so I imagine most will)
